Exclusive to Aberdeen Vinyl Records, the energy and passion of this local heavy rock band on this cracking LP by The Zealous Chieftains is filling out our shop this morning. I liked it when Zac let me hear a track many months ago. And now it’s a record! It doesn’t sound like anytime other than The Zealous Chieftains. They have their own distinct sound. But I suspect if you like Motörhead and AD/DC you’ll love this.

Although the preceding This Year’s Model and My Aim Is True are often considered ‘cooler’ LPs, Armed Forces (his third LP) is Elvis Costello’s best work. He stated in many interviews since that the band, The Attractions, credited here for the first time as equal billing, never matched the jelled performances on Armed Forces. It was a creative peak. Lyrically it’s Costello’s most intricate record, blistering acidic takes on life, politics and relationships. Poetry with an angry edge backed by playing that is both raw yet with sophisticated, majestic production. The perception of this album suffered at the time as it was advertised on telly! The ultimate sell out for someone considered p***y. I remember watching Kenny Everette’s Television Show and seeing Armed Forced advertised during the commercial break! I was gobsmacked and like many of my peers made a note to ignore an album promoted do crassly. And yet, when I inadvertently heard the more pop related tracks from it on the radio, I succumbed, (no doubt channeling my Inner Beatle) buying it a year after its release. I still have that copy of Armed Forces. It’s still in my Top 20. Each song is like. Mini movie, so vivid, so atmospheric, claustrophobic even.
