Tywysoges Gymreig oedd Santes Dwynwen yn y 5ed ganrif. Roedd hi wedi syrthio mewn cariad â dyn ifanc o'r enw Maelon ond roedd ei thad, y Brenin Brychan, am iddi briodi rhywun arall. Yn ôl y chwedl, ymwelodd angel â hi a rhoi diod iddi a iachaodd ei cholled a throi Maelon yn rhew.
Rhoddwyd tri dymuniad i Dwynwen: yn gyntaf, y byddai Maelon yn cael ei dadmer; yn ail, y byddai gwir gariadon yn cael cyflawni eu breuddwydion; yn olaf, ni fyddai hi byth yn priodi. Yna, cysegrodd ei bywyd i Dduw gan fyw ar Ynys Llanddwyn, sydd wedi’i henwi ar ei hôl, hyd ei marwolaeth yn AD465.
Daeth Dwynwen yn adnabyddus fel nawddsant cariadon, a gwnaed pererindod i'w ffynnon sanctaidd ar yr ynys. Dywedid y gellid dewino ffyddlondeb cariad trwy symudiadau rhai llyswennod a oedd yn byw yn y ffynnon sanctaidd. Gwnaed hyn gan y wraig sy’n gwasgaru briwsion bara ar yr wyneb yn gyntaf, cyn iddi osod ei hances ar y dŵr. Pe buasai’r llysywen yn tarfu arno, byddai ei chariad yn ffyddlon.

Tomorrow is St Dwynwen's Day, Wales’/Cymru’s Valentines Day 💘 But who was St Dwynwen and why is she associated with love? St Dwynwen was a Welsh princess in the 5th century. She had fallen in love with a young man named Maelon but her father, King Brychan, wanted her to marry someone else. According to legend, an angel visited her and gave her a potion that healed her loss and turned Maelon into ice.
Dwynwen was granted three wishes: firstly, that Maelon would be thawed; secondly, that true lovers would have their dreams fulfilled; finally, she would never marry. She then devoted her life to God and lived on Llanddwyn Island, which is named after her, until her death in AD465.
Dwynwen became known as the patron saint of lovers, and pilgrimages were made to her holy well on the island. It was said that the faithfulness of a lover could be divined through the movements of some eels that lived in the holy well. This was done by the woman first scattering breadcrumbs on the surface, then laying her handkerchief on the water. If the eel disturbed it then her lover would be faithful
