Establishing the string slots for the sympathetic strings.

I’ve now made several bridges for this viol as I’ve been curious to see what design and material works best for the playing strings and sympathetic strings.

I made one bridge to accommodate both the playing strings and the symp strings.

Fitting a boxwood nut to treble viol. Boxwood is an ideal wood for nuts and instrument fittings. It grows slowly therefore is hard wearing and can be found in abundance in Europe. It cuts like hard butter and looks beautiful.

Second names of myself and of the musician buying the viol carved into the back of the pegbox. Juggling the letters around to make the names fit in the small space available abstracted the names, visually, but I enjoy the way they look.

Fitting a boxwood nut for a treble viol.

After varnishing an instrument and letting the varnish set, I apply dark oil paint to certain areas of the instrument. The paint is removed before it dries using a cloth, leaving a certain amount of paint within the crevasses of the carving. This is deliberate and is a technique that can be seen in figure carvings on furniture and musical instruments of the 18th century used to give contrast to carvings. The final oil paint in this case was a layer of green for the laurel wreath.

Part of the process of making a baroque tailpiece. The design in this case copies the pre existing geometric design on the fingerboard. Solid maple with stained cherry / maple purfling.
