We are devastated by the news of Mikala Jones' passing. His quiet demeanor and easy smile made a positive impact on those lucky enough to meet him. His passion for deep barrels and his unquenchable wanderlust led him to explore points beyond to get even deeper.
Mikala shared the experience with his amazing POV images letting many of us share the feeling even though we lacked his mastery of tube riding. Mikala held the secret spots close and always respected the locals and only sharing the experience with his trusted group of friends.
Mikala shared his passion and knowledge first on the NS and later throughout
Indonesia. Always a gracious and humble host.
Mikala's contribution to surfing is multifaceted and profound.
Even more importantly, Mikala was a dedicated husband and proud father. Our thoughts go out to the entire Jones Ohana.
Mikala will be dearly missed.

- style power and respect. He was a genuine person and touched many on his journey through life. He inspired generations with masterful tube riding technique and truly opened Backdoor. His warm smile and Hawaiian soul will be missed.🕊️

" I was anti-Gerry... he was making capital L's and I wanted to make figure 8s" said the Rubberman of his unique approach to wave riding. Along with Buttons and Mark Liddell, the Rubberman wanted to do radical direction changes, break out from stuffy, souly straight lines. And he did it with some success. Riding shorter boards in solid surf, inspiring the Dogtown crew to revolutionize skateboarding (the 'Bert' slide), getting non-endemic sponsorships, riding around Sydney in chauffered Roller, all done with an outrageous 'fro, Bertlemann paved the way for a fresh, rad approach to riding waves. Slater called him "The first New Schooler" while Pottz hailed Bertlemann as
"the Godfather of high performance.
