The perfect Summer thriller in our YA section by the amazing Megan! Love her work, thanks Megan for another great read! ❤️
You won’t go on a boat for some time after reading this thriller by Megan. Someone is going to get hurt during this trip, you don’t trust everyone, and you just hope for the best. Megan is able to get you into the story rapidly and you’re just trying to survive the outcome of this Summer suspense.
A vacation in paradise turns deadly when four teens' sailing charter hits stormy seas – but the storm outside may not be as deadly as the storm within…Hannah is having an incredible spring break. A week at a resort in Mexico with her best friend Emmy and her family is perfect for de-stressing from senior year, even if it's awkward being around Emmy's older brother, Jackson, whom she's had a crush on for as long as she can remember. Still, the beach is gorgeous. So is the guy they meet in the surf. Except Hannah is now the third wheel in Emmy's vacation romance. Eager to impress Emmy, her wealthy new boyfriend charters a private sailboat to make the most of their last day in paradise, and Hannah and Jackson are invited along. As the clouds roll in and the skies darken, their boat is the only one leaving the marina. And the further they get into open water, the more unsettled Hannah becomes. A storm is brewing onboard that's as deadly as the one racing toward them. Forget surviving graduation. Who will make it back to land alive?

She gets accused of killing four men. The question is, of course, did she do it? We get to know Katie through the point of view of several men in her life. With each person Katie shows a different self. So the questions remain: who is Katie and did she do it? This thriller uses a different approach to figure out the truth… but truth for one person is not the same as for the other… Are you already intrigued?!

This morning was our last intermediate book club… during these Summer months… We will be back in October, no worries! ;) We discussed the “scandalous” book ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde. Everyone enjoyed reading this book so I am happy! Favorite character was debatable (in a positive sense, of course, because our book clubs are always fun), things could be said about society, and why did Wilde want to be like Dorian?? Of course we talked about our society right now as well because things have changed but did they change enough? Well no, but that’s worth another discussion ^^ We went through the topic of aging in Wilde’s book vs our society and finished talking about Pl***oy. Because why not 🤣 So as you can see, lots of things happen during one book club. Thank you all for this great time ❤️

It’s the last day of Pride month so one last publication with a q***r book (last publication with these colors, we don’t stop reading q***r!). We will also publish a blog post about your q***r book recommendations and the books I didn’t finish yet ^^ Anyway, back to the story. This is a debut graphic novel for YA. It has an interesting concept of using tarot cards in this magical world. What I liked about the book: the color codes for each character (and learning more about them), the body positivity, the q***r representation, and found family. I am intrigued and would like to know what #2 will bring (already have this one^^), I just hope there will be less “haha” after each sentence because they take away the seriousness of the story and more depth but since it’s the first one, I think we dive into this later.
James, Daphne, Koko, and Sonny have all grown up surrounded by magic in the Arcana, an organization of witches that protects the magical world, run by the mysterious and secretive Majors. Eli Jones, however, didn’t even know other witches existed . . . until he stumbled into James. As James introduces Eli to the world of the Arcana, he finds the family he never had, and a blossoming romance with James. The five new friends soon realize that sinister things are afoot and everything may not be what it seems at the Arcana. When the group delves deeper into the mystery surrounding the deaths of their parents and the Major’s rise to power, they discover that they’re at the center of a curse - one they’ve just unwittingly set into motion. As the friends search for answers, they’ll have to confront the cursed legacy that links them in hopes of freeing their futures.

All Dirk wanted to do was grab a cup of coffee and now they have to deal with a potential apocalypse... I enjoyed this story more than I expected! The only thing: I have some trouble with placing it at the right age. It feels a bit young but some parts are not at all (when we have another POV for example, can’t say too much without giving away spoilers). So I think middle grade+. The story is about getting kidnapped, knowing you are NOT the chosen one but still have to deal with good and evil, friendship, and very important: being non-binary. Dirk wants to let people know they are non-binary but they don’t want to feel like an inconvenience. Will their kidnappers easily accept them? Hahaha you see, this story also has quite some funny moments that made me chuckle on the train.
Dirk isn’t the chosen one. Not even close. So how did they end up in the middle of a potential apocalypse? All Dirk wanted was to escape another argument with their parents and go for a nice quiet coffee. Instead, they’ve been kidnapped by agents, attacked by mal-realmers and forced to wear a boiler suit that they’re pretty sure someone died in. When Dirk is taken to Base, a secret underground …well … base, they learn way more than they need to. More about other realms, more about the battle between good and evil, and more about the absolutely terrifying Violent Jack, an evil mal-realmer determined to bring about the end of the world. Both sides need the chosen one. But there’s not a lot Dirk can do about it, is there? It’s not like it’s them. Unfortunately for Dirk, not everyone knows that.

One of the q***r books I read during the train ride back home. This story is about breakup, letting go, listening, friendship, and following your heart. It’s the perfect beach read for this warm weather ;) I loved the magical aspect about the house - showing you moments of the past (can’t say more though). Sometimes I did want to shake Harlowe and tell him to just stop and listen for a sec ^^ The side characters also made this story more fun and not just about a breakup (q***r reading of Jaws!). And, of course, a special mention to Sir Duke 🐈
Harlowe could use a break. With his academic future over, just like his relationship with Jackson, a suspiciously cheap summer rental on the Cape feels like just the escape he needs. But when he arrives at the picturesque seaside cottage, he's alarmed to find his discouraging old professor in the living room, his father making coffee in the kitchen, a mysterious young man fixing a hole in the wall, and worst of all, Jackson is in the bathroom. None of them will leave. No one else can see them. And they just won't leave him alone. But Harlowe soon realises he isn't the only one who can see the house's magic, and as the summer grows hot and thick with tourists, old wounds and fresh secrets – both in and outside its walls – begin to transform him. And that mysterious man seems almost to be everywhere he looks now... but can Harlowe let go of the past long enough to listen?
