WHO IS JEAN NIPON?
Throw back to the artist’s recent exhibition at the gallery: 5 min. video to understand his practice
Jean Nipon (born in 1977, lives and works in Paris) is a French artist who graduated in 2000 from les Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. After a career as a musician that made him famous on the international scene, he dedicated himself exclusively to drawing and had his first-ever solo exhibition at Galerie PACT.
Nipon has been influenced by masters of ancient painting such as Piero della Francesca, Nicolas Poussin, Georges De La Tour or Ingres, and portrays contemporary characters using rare colored pencils found around the world. In his drawings, one can recognise items from the past, such as Balthus’ room, a chest of drawers of Vermeer or a jar from Velázquez.
Thousands of years after the invention of drawing, there is still a need for humans to look at images of themselves and of the world around them, confronting the viral madness of images constructed and disseminated on social media. This unexplained desire remains unchanged for a single reason: the aura. It is the aura that makes a work last, independently of the topic or style, it is this first energy that nourishes and enlightens the work of the artist. The quest for an archaic truth is at the heart of the artist’s pictorial practice.
