Very sad to report that Hervé Huitric, one of the founders of France’s Groupe Art Informatique de Vincennes, or GAIV, has moved on to a better place. Over the last few years Huitric had struggled with various illnesses. With his wife, Monique, Hervé was among the most influential thinkers in France’s generative art scene in the late 60s and early 70s. After many years of being forgotten, he and his wife’s work (all of their artistic output is ) has recently received more attention being featured in such exhibitions as Radical Software and Electric Dreams at Tate Modern. The Pompidou Center also acquired he and his wife’s work. Hervé was very generous, intelligent, funny, and kind. We will miss him very much.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of the artist Ruth Leavitt (1944-2024). Ruth left us at 5 this morning, according to her husband Michael. She fell ill at the opening of Radical Software at MUDAM this September, spending time in hospital in Luxembourg, and never fully recovered her health. I remember Ruth’s energy and joy. We had the pleasure of exhibiting her innovative work with computers from the 1970s with the show Computer Derivative in 2022. Since, her work has entered new collections and been shown in museum surveys such as Electric Dreams at Tate Modern, Radical Software at MUDAM and Kunsthalle Vienna, and Electric Op at AKG in Buffalo. Ruth is gaining the recognition she deserves. Apart from her brilliant art work, Ruth will always be remembered for her 1976 book Artist and Computer, today considered a landmark document of the time. We were honored to work with Ruth and will continue to honor her memory. Such a fantastic person who will be sorely missed. Adieu, dearest Ruth.

Who else but Frank Malina, the pioneering light artist who was also a pioneer of rockets by co-founding the Jet Propulsion laboratory would take Galileo’s experiment about gravity as a subject for one of his early pastel drawings? Around 1590, Galileo Galilei (then professor of mathematics at the University of Pisa) is said to have dropped unequal weights of the same material from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to demonstrate that their time of descent was independent of their mass.According to the story, Galileo discovered through this experiment that the objects fell with the same acceleration, proving his prediction true, while at the same time disproving Aristotle’s theory of gravity (which states that objects fall at speed proportional to their mass). In 1974 the artist’s who participated in an exhibition of computer art in Angers France included the likes of Jean-Claude Marquette, Vera Molnar, Alexandre Vitkine, Monique Nahas and Hervré Huitric.

The Pompidou Centre, thanks to curator Camille Lenglois, has opened a room dedicated to the pioneering French artists — including Hevré Huitric, Monique Nahas, Jean-Claude Marquette and Fannie and Jacques Dupré — who in the early 1970s formed the Groupe Art et Informatique de Vincennes, where they used computers to make new and vital works of art that have flown largely under the radar until recently. It shows that art history is still being written today with some of the unsung groundbreakers of digital art only now being recognized.
