IT’S HERE ! I dreamed of it, and now here we are damn fine readers !
We’re starting a damn fine cine book club ! YES WE ARE 🎬🍿
Our first pick is the myth, the (wo)man, the legend : Poor Things, by Alasdair Gray, adapted as a movie by Yorgos Lanthimos !
If you’re wondering how this will work, it’s very easy :
You read the fantastic book ! Then we meet, on Saturday 3rd of February at 8.30 PM, at THE movie theater of Lyon 7 : Cinéma Comoedia, we watch the movie together and afterwards we go to the bookstore to have a drink and TALK ABOUT IT ! YES damn fine readers, you’ll be able to talk about the adaptation with people that have actually read the book (can you feel in this post that I’m dying to finally be able to do this ? 🥹)
You can of course also join us at the movie theater even if you don’t think you’ll have the time to read the book before or if you just started it !
To register, you’ll have to pay the cine book club fees that you can either buy on the website (https://shop.damnfinebookstore.com/news/show/75) or in the shop next time you come ! There’s a limited number of seats so far so if you want to come, don’t hesitate to order online, this way you’re sure to be in !!
You can of course also buy the book at the shop, I have a few in stock right now and will receive more next week !!
I can’t wait to share this amazing moment with you all !

JANUARY BOOKCLUB !
- January theme : Favourite book of 2023 ! I love to create new traditions and I feel like January will always be the perfect month to think about aaaaall the books read the previous year and pick *the one* ! I knowww it’s difficult to pick only one, you don’t necessarily have to choose your fave book, you can just pick the one that made you laugh the most, cry the most, the one that warmed your heart the most, etc. ! I can’t wait to see what you’ll bring (and what I’ll bring 🤡)
- January book : Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata. I discovered Sayaka Murata earlier this year with Earthlings and my jaw is still on the floor. I would have loved to pick it as January’s book but I can not force this story on anyone 🙃 and Convenience Store Woman is just the perfect amount of Sayaka Murata for a bookclub !! It’ll be our first translated book too, and I can’t wait to discuss it with you !!
The plot : Keiko Furukura had always been considered a strange child. People find her odd and her family worries she’ll never fit in. To make them happy, she takes a job at a newly opened convenience store where she finds peace and purpose in simple daily tasks. But in Keiko’s circle, it just won’t do for an unmarried woman to spend her time stacking shelves. As the pressure to find a new job — or worse, a husband — increases, Keiko is forced to take desperate action...

DECEMBER BOOKCLUB !
- December theme : It’s a kind of magic ! To celebrate the magical time that the end of the year can be, bring your favorite magic-related story ! It can be fantasy or magical realism, it can be with witches or just some unnatural magical things happening !! I can’t wait to see what you’ll bring, and I think I already know which book I’ll pick 🤭
- December book : The Long Shadow by Celia Fremlin. I won’t lie to you, I picked this book first thing for the cover ! It’s a novel first published in 1975 but it has been re-published, with others Celia Fremlin’s books, by Faber & Faber, and I love this classic/vintage look ! As for the book, it’s giving unreliable narrator, it’s giving haunting, ghosts, grief, aaaand toxic family — isn’t it everything we love to read for Christmas ?! And while I loved a lot of things about the book, some things I didn’t like so much, which means that I can’t WAIT to talk about it with you of course !!
The plot : Imogen, who’s been a widow for a few weeks, gets ready to spend Christmas alone, but she finds her home filling up with unexpected guests... Who’s rifling through her late husband’s paper ? Who left the half-drunk whiskey bottle beside his favourite chair? And who’s this man, calling her, accusing her of killing her husband and insisting he can prove her guilt...?

NOVEMBER BOOKCLUB !
- November theme : Memoir ! To celebrate non-fiction November, let’s talk about your favourite memoirs ! I know I read loads of them and I’ll have difficulty picking just one, and I can’t wait for you to help me add new ones to my already gigantic tbr pile !
- November book : BFFs ; The Radical Potential of Female Friendship by Anahit Behrooz. I read this one in one sitting, it’s one of those small book that definitely pack a punch ! I couldn’t stop highlighting excerpts and I definitely can’t wait to talk about it and about the whole topic of female friendship with you !
The plot : Friendships can be the foundation of our earliest memories and most formative moments. But why are they often seen as secondary to romantic, or familial connection, something to age out of and take a back seat to other relationships? BFFs is an examination of the power of female friendship, not as something lesser, but as a site of radical intimacy, as told through the cultural touchstones around us.

Both bookclubs are full !

OCTOBER BOOKCLUB !
- October theme : Gothic ! You know me, I’m all for the dark vibes, the big old scary houses, the mist above the marshes... Well you got it : this month, we’ll talk about gothic stories ! It can be fiction, fantasy, horror, short stories, as long as it’s gothic ! I can’t wait to see what you’ll bring, I think it’s my fave theme so far ! Super excited !!
- October book : Salt Slow by Julia Armfield. I read this one in 24 hours. I started it ‘just like that, maybe for a bookclub but not in October, I’m not sure, it won’t be dark enough, blablablahhh’ but in fact I just couldn’t put it down. I loved every story, which never happened to me before in a collection. They are eerie, dark, weird and mysterious (perfect blend for October, isn’t it ?) and I just can’t wait to talk about each of them with you !!
The plot : In her brilliantly inventive and haunting debut collection of stories, Julia Armfield explores the body, mapping the skin and bones of her characters through their experiences of isolation, obsession, love and revenge. Blurring the mythic and the gothic with the everyday, Salt Slow considers characters in motion - turning away, turning back or simply turning into something new entirely...

September’s here and each year it rhymes with birthday (well it doesn’t really rhymes but you know what I mean)
This year it’s the three year anniversary for the shop and to celebrate, you’ll only find books with ‘three’ in the title and a huge big balloon because why do something small and discreet when you can do something big and obvious? 🤓
I can’t wait to see you all to celebrate on the 16th & in the meantime, the shop’s open from 10.30 to 18.30 so see you soon 🤸🏻‍♀️

SEPTEMBER BOOKCLUB !
- September theme : Underrated classics ! As a bookseller, I'm very often reading new releases, and with so many new books coming out each week, it's difficult to pick some older books ! So for a change, let's talk about an old book (let's say that said-book has to be at least several decades old) that we love and that we don't see anywhere & never hear about !!! I'm excited to see what you'll bring !
- September book : Vladimir, by Julia May Jonas. I finished this one last week and have so many thoughts about it. I disagreed with the main character so many times, was sometimes shocked and she made me sooo uncomfortable, which was for sure the purpose. If you're into literary fiction & unlikable main characters, you can go for this one for sure !
The plot : Our unnamed narrator is an English professor whose husband, a charismatic professor at the same small college, is under investigation for his inappropriate relationships with his former students. The couple have long had a mutual understanding when it comes to their extramarital pursuits, but with these new allegations, life has become far less comfortable for them both. This is when she meets and becomes infatuated with Vladimir, a married young novelist who’s just arrived on campus. But the infatuation soon turns to obsession...

My own summer reading pile (what are you saying? There’s too many? Too many books? I’m sorry I can’t understand this sentence)
YES it’s a very big pile, but what can I say, I’m an optimist 🤡
I can explain these choices very quickly :
Some books on this pile are here BECAUSE OF YOU : Cursed Bread is here thanks to , The Guest is here thanks to , Insatiable is here thanks to (I remember you told me you disliked it, made me very curious), Remarkably Bright Creatures is here thanks to , Giovanni’s Room is here thanks to !
NOW for the rest of them, it’s easy : The Pisces is here because it’s Melissa Broder, Burnt Sugar is here because it’s a toxic mother daughter relationship, Sirens & Muses is here because have you seen that cover?, The girls of Summer is here because there’s summer in the title, Silver Nitrate is here because it looks like it’s Mulholland Drive, American Mermaid is here because there’s a mermaid and I have no reason for Sugar Baby, I just want it.
I’m veeeeery excited about all of them !! It makes up for the lil sadness I have to not see you for three weeks ! But I can’t wait to see you all back in August, to chat about all these books when (if) I’ve read them all !!
What’s your TBR list/pile for August ?!!!
(Swipe if you want to see one of the many failed photo I got while trying to take this one)

Damn Fine Event upcoming : Book signing with Cate Green !
🌺
Cate Green grew up in Buckinghamshire and moved to France over twenty years ago. She now lives in Lyon & is a damn fine customer of the shop ! Her debut novel is inspired by her late mother-in-law, a resilient and feisty Holocaust survivor. It won the 2019 Exeter Novel Prize.
📕
The Curious Kidnapping of Nora W tells us the story of family matriarch and Holocaust survivor Nora Wojnaswki is about to become the oldest person in the world, ever, and her family are determined to celebrate in style. But Nora has other ideas. When she disappears with her carer Arifa on a trip down memory lane, a wartime secret, buried deep for over 70 years, will finally be revealed... A powerful book that I was lucky enough to read in advance and that I love ! It'll make you laugh & it'll make you cry !
🌺
Cate will be at the shop on September 1 to sign her book, which you can buy from now on at the shop ! You'll get to meet her & have a little drink, is there a better way to end the summer ?

JULY BOOKCLUB !
- July theme : I read it in one sitting ! This month, bring a book that was so good that you read it in one sitting, a story so addictive that each time you were trying to put it down, you couldn't and had to pick it up again ! It can be fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, etc. ! Can't wait to see what you'll bring, I know I have several titles in mind !
- July book : Klara and The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. I'm still reading it, I have around 50 pages left so can't guarantee you that it ends well, but I can guarantee you that it's beautiful. The prose, the characters, especially Klara, who's probably the sweetest character of all time ? She's not human so this explains that... anyway, I'm loving it, and I can't wait to talk about it because there's a lot to talk about !
The plot : From her place in the store, Klara, an AF (Artificial Friend) with outstanding observational qualities, watches carefully the behaviour of those who come in to browse. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans...

20/06/2023

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of The Curious Kidnapping of Nora W, Cate Green's debut novel and I'm so glad to have read it !
The center of this book is Nora, family matriarch and Holocaust survivor. At 122 years old, she's about to become the oldest person in the world, ever, and her family are determined to celebrate in style, and especially her great grandaughter, Debs, who's in charge of everything for this celebration. But Nora isn't your average centenarian and she has other ideas. When she disappears with her carer Arifa on a trip down memory lane in the East End of London, a wartime secret, buried deep for over 70 years, will finally be revealed..
So yes, it's about Nora, but it's so much more ! It's about family & chosen family, it's about war and how it can affect you in different & similar ways, it's about loss & surviving, about leaving your home & your country, and trying to create something new in another one, and it's about women and the relationship between them. I loved this book, it made me laugh & cry and I highly recommend it !

This book will be out on July 20th, and you can preorder it from now on (link in bio for the preorder). FYI, because it doesn't happen every day : Cate Green, the author, lives in Lyon and will be signing her book at the shop by the end of summer, I'll keep you posted ! In the meantime : preorder this book, it'll make you teary AND it'll make you happy !

Out in paperback todayyyy
Some of last year’s fave are finally out in paperback today :
You Made a Fool of Death with your Beauty is the perfect spicy romance you need for this summer !
I Kissed Shara Wheeler is the perfect YA-mystery-romance you didn’t know you needed in June !
Stone Blind is the perfect mythological retelling you will devour under the sun ! I LOVED IT so much !

But we also have today :
Milk Teeth, which seems to be the perfect literary fiction for the summer, taking us from England to Barcelona !
The Book of Goose also seems to be perfect because it takes us from America to French countryside !
And finally, Fairy Tale is of course perfect because it takes us from reality for another world, and isn’t it why we’re all here, reading books ?

Now tell me, the hardest part, which one will you read this weekend under the sun ?

First of all : sorry about this awful picture, I didn’t see it was THIS out of frame when I told everyone « ok this one’s very good » — spoiler alert : it wasn’t. But ANYWAY ! We met this morning to talk about The Girls by Emma Cline and what a nice chat we had ! Here is a small summary of what we thought about the book : most of us loved the writing and thought it was very good as a literary piece, but the story was so sad in fact, from beginning to end, that it left us quite depressed. The book speaks very well about what it is to be a teenage girl, no matter the time period and this depiction of what it is to be a 14 yo girl was really really well done. If you're looking for a book about cult/manson murders/etc., it won't be the book for you though ! Most of us will be sure to check out other books by Emma Cline !!
But as usual we digressed and talked about Tarantino & Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Twilight & Hunger Games, problematic authors/creators, Emma & Renesmée (yes, you read that correctly), Courtney Summers & Ari Aster, and many more !
Thanks again for reading this book with me and joining me this morning to talk about it !

‘I don’t remember the title but the cover was red ?…’
If it’s something you already thought/said/asked for? Well then, welcome to Damn Fine Bookstore, where I’ll dig in the shelves to find THE book you’re talking about. And in the meantime, if you’re looking for a red cover, maybe it’s already in the window ?
PS : are you hearing Taylor Swift too, or is it just me? ♥️

MAY BOOKCLUB !
- May theme : Auto-buy author ! We all got this one author (and sometimes we even got several of them) whose work we collect, new and old, regardless of the storyline. I want you to bring THE book that started this auto-buy thing for you ! Can't WAIT to see which book (and which author) you'll bring !
- May book : The Girls, by Emma Cline. This fictionalized reimagining of the Charles Manson “family” and the notorious murders perpetrated by Manson’s “girls” has been my main preoccupation last week, and now it'll be yours. If you're into cults stories, lost teenage girls, 1969 California and middle aged strong women, this one's for you !!
The plot : Evie Boyd is 14 and desperate to be noticed. It's the summer of 1969 and empty days stretch ahead of her. Until she sees the girls. Hair long and uncombed, jewelry catching the sun. And at their centre, Suzanne. If not for Suzanne, she might not have gone. But, intoxicated by her, Evie follows the girls back to the decaying ranch where they live. Was there a warning? A sign of what was coming? Or did Evie know already that there was no way back?
You can now write me an email at [email protected] (link in bio) to let me know if you wish to participate to the :

You know the drill : ‘the movie is good but the book is better’ is almost always true so don’t hesitate and read these ones before watching the adaptation !

What a great bookclub !! We talked about thrillers in all its forms !
We talked about The Ice Princess, The Couple at the Table, Before I Go to Sleep, The Searcher, Bunny, The Da Vinci Code, Exiles, Rebecca & Sharp Object
But we also talked about Everything Everything, The One Memory of Flora Banks, Harlan Coben, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Daisy Jones & the Six, movies adaptation, goodreads review, Colin Firth, how animal's deaths are the worst trigger ever, the Bechdel Test and many more things.
We came to the conclusion, after sharing our thoughts on all these thrillers, that it was never a good idea to 1- go back to your hometown 2- get married 3- go live in a remote place full of sheeps !
It was such a funny and awesome evening, I wanted to add some thrillers to my TBR list and it's a done deal so THANK YOU !
