Christopher New is a meticulous writer who has made full use of his career, as an academic philosopher, and the locations to which life has taken him - Oxford, Hong Kong, India, Egypt and Malta, to name but a few - to create an almost unique niche in modern literature.
His early novels ("Goodbye Chairman Mao", "The Chinese Box"...) tended towards plot-driven thrillers. More recent novels ("Gage Street Courtesan", "Chinese Spring") have become more introspective, drifting towards a melancholic acceptance of destiny.
The "Kaminsky Cure" lies somewhere between and is the slightly satirical story of a mixed Aryan-Jewish family trying to navigate the rising tide of Na**sm in Europe. The title is brilliantly misleading and refers not to a remedy for some life-threatening disease, but to a simple, but effective (and somewhat comic), technique to suppress one's frustration and rage at what was happening in the world at that time (and, I think, would be equally useful in today's world).
For anyone interested, Eymet le Livre Bookshop has two new copies available.

Local author Andrew Weaver defies categorization. Imagine a boiling cauldron of writer-soup into which you toss some H.P. Lovecraft, a good helping of Saki, and a portion of Roald Dahl; spice it up with a few sprinkles of Ian McEwan and stir well. That’s as close as I can get, without spoiling the broth.
So far, we’ve had "Martin", a novel about the fragile nature of memory and the ownership of one’s past, "Twenty-One Perspectives", an image-inspired collection of 21 stories which Andrew edited, and "A Strange Mind Stranger Stories", a collection of his own stories which he describes as “twenty-one visions of the uncanny … stories that slip between cosmic dread and intimate mystery, exploring what remains when identity is stretched, rewritten or lost entirely.”
Andrew recently escaped from his cage for a brief spell and the result is a new book, "A Dark Mind, Darker Stories", in which he lures us into new literary depths. As Andrew says, “These stories linger where guilt and longing meet … and where the human mind becomes its own haunted landscape.”
The book is prefaced with a gentle reminder: "Keep the lights on if you must. And remember – once a story is in your mind, it’s yours to carry."
The book has just been published and is available in Eymet le Livre bookshop at 39 Rue du Temple.

Today's €1 braderie table contains a motley collection of French and English cookery books, all in good condition.
The braderie table changes weekly, so the books will be there till Saturday.
Lots of bargains. Come and have a browse.
By the way, if, like me, your new to the French language, une braderie is the word for an old-fashioned jumble sale (or, if you're a shop, it's like a clearance sale). I've only just learnt the word, so I thought I'd try and put it to good use.
Bonne lecture!

The question is not "To be, or not to be," but whether to read Hamlet or Hamnet. For, although the names are synonymous, the stories are not. One was the Prince of Denmark, heir to the throne, the other was Shakespeare's son, who died at age eleven.
We have both in the bookshop, so why not come and take a look ... and make up your own mind.

Artist and author, Andrew Weaver, will be launching his most recent book “Twenty-One Perspectives” at Eymet le Livre Bookshop on Sunday, February 22, from 11:00 to 15:00.

Andrew challenged 21 sci-fi authors from different backgrounds and cultures to write a story inspired by the same single image (see below). The result is a collection of 21 unique stories that take us on 21 different journeys into the vast realms of science fiction.

Andrew will also have available two of his other books – “Martin” (a dark, psychological drama that explores the fragile boundary between reality and dreams) and “A Strange Mind, Stranger Stories” (21 sci-fi stories that delve into worlds where science and imagination merge).

He will also be displaying some of his AI-generated works of art.
