Christopher New is a meticulous writer who has made full use of his career, as an academic philosopher, and the locations to which life has taken him - Oxford, Hong Kong, India, Egypt and Malta, to name but a few - to create an almost unique niche in modern literature.
His early novels ("Goodbye Chairman Mao", "The Chinese Box"...) tended towards plot-driven thrillers. More recent novels ("Gage Street Courtesan", "Chinese Spring") have become more introspective, drifting towards a melancholic acceptance of destiny.
The "Kaminsky Cure" lies somewhere between and is the slightly satirical story of a mixed Aryan-Jewish family trying to navigate the rising tide of Na**sm in Europe. The title is brilliantly misleading and refers not to a remedy for some life-threatening disease, but to a simple, but effective (and somewhat comic), technique to suppress one's frustration and rage at what was happening in the world at that time (and, I think, would be equally useful in today's world).
