Every restoration project starts with an assessment

So today I arrived home from my three day trip to assess and restore one library oak parquet.

As I suggested to restore one room first while carrying out a full assessment of the remaining floors. It’s a key part of how I approach restoration requests

The original photographs suggested some repairs would be needed, but photographs only tell part of the story. Old pine floors must be assessed in person before I can provide an accurate recommendation.

That proved to be essential.

During the assessment, I discovered extensive Capricorn beetle damage. In one room, the floor was beyond restoration, so I recommended replacement rather than attempting a repair.

Imagine if I had priced the project from photographs alone, only to arrive on site and discover that one of the floors couldn’t be restored. That wouldn’t be fair to the client, nor would it allow me to deliver the standard Parfait Parquet is known for.

This is why I always recommend an on-site assessment, especially for older pine floors.

An assessment is about far more than measuring square metres or preparing a devis. It confirms whether a floor is suitable for restoration, uncovers hidden problems before work begins, and ensures my recommendations and quotation are based on evidence—not assumptions.

For long-distance projects, restoring one room first also allows clients to experience my workmanship while I assess the rest of the property.

A good assessment protects the client, protects the project, and leads to a more accurate outcome for everyone.

A devis should be based on evidence, not guesswork.

Restoring parquet in a historic château after the decorating has already been completed requires more than good sanding.

This short video follows the restoration of the Blue Room, a historic bedroom at Château de Lalacelle.

Nobody wanted this 250 m² restoration project. Looking at this room, I understood why.

Fourteen rooms.

Every original timber floor buried beneath layers of grey levelling compound and old glue.

When I first walked into the Oval Room last October, I stood still for a minute.

The room was beautiful. But the floor was a nightmare.

The room was already finished apart from the parquet!

Our job was not simply to restore the floor.

It was to recover it without damaging the room around it.

Of all fourteen rooms, the Oval Room was the most challenging.

I hope the photographs tell the story.
