Cutting the purfling channel. Using a lot of force - that’s why my hand trembles. This piece of maple is very hard. The maple for the violin I’m building in parallel is softer. It will be interesting to hear how the two violins will sound in comparison with each other. The model is the same and the spruce for the tables is quite similar between the two.

Opus 78 and 79 taking shape. Next step is the purfling (inlay) along the edges before finalizing the arching. These two violins are both Guarneri inspired models, but I already have a feeling how they will wind up with slightly different sound characters.

I think this will be my « Violon du Diable ». Guarneri del Gesù made a violin in 1734 that is called just that. I first found a knot in the maple back that was totally hidden inside the wood blank. And now I got a blood stain on it too. Might be a violin for someone who wants to make a pact with the devil and play like a demon, like Paganini 🎻👹 I won’t hide the knot by inserting a wood inlay. I’ll let it be and might inlay a mother of pearl dot in it. The maple is too good to throw it away and I’ve already put quite a bit of work into it.

Two guitars that I made years ago, bought by the same musician. They were a dream to play on, as hand built guitars should be, and the owner loves them both. You can see that they are well used. Nowadays I make only violins and violas but since I play the guitar too I’m eager to build a couple more… one for myself and one for a client in Sweden who is waiting for the ultimate guitar

Taking the ribs down to the right thickness using a plane with a toothed blade to prevent the fibers of the flamed maple from being torn out, and then finishing the surface with a scraper. Getting a good surface on the outside first before working the inside down until I have a very even thickness of 1 mm.

Some photos from our vacation in Liguria, Italy. Now we’re back home in Béziers. It was worth the five hour drive to really relax and enjoy the Italian atmosphere, food, wine and the ocean view.

My latest viola, now out on trial with a potential buyer. Personal model, length 41,7 cm. Big sound, warm but with sufficient brilliance to carry the sound in a concert hall. Comfortable to play despite its big size. I’ve mostly made violas between 40,5 and 41 cm length, but very happy with this one too

Repair work on a fine Jacquot violin with badly worn edges. This was the last big repair work I did for a client before focusing entirely upon my own projects, making violins and restoring my own vintage violins that I’ve collected during the years, which will be for sale little by little.
