Usually, I make this universal soap bar with 100% coconut oil. This time I felt adding a drop of castor oil as it has lots of ricinoleic fatty acid in it and I thought it would make the lather creamier. And I think it really did so! Also the color turned out to be as creamy white because of lavender tea instead of plain water 🫖 There’s also a bit of salt for antibacterial purposes and essential oil of peppermint for freshness during those dull cleaning moments 🤍

🤍 Humalashampoo- saippua
🌱 Hop shampoo soap
Here I used hops collected from Bulgarian village, as part of water base. There’s also big amount of infused rosemary oil, raw honey and some juniper essential oil. There’s also spruce paste in the darker part. Oils used here are castor, sunflower, neem, coconut and almond oils. So far, this is my favorite shampoo soap ☺️
Have you tried shampoo soap for your hair?

🪵 all people on the planet Earth can be divided into two camps: those who love the aroma of tar and those who don't. Since I was a child, my favourite soap was tar soap. Later in life, I worked in the Finnish Forest Museum Lusto where I learnt about the traditional method of tar making here in the North. The folk technique of burning tar in Finland is using tar kilns (in Finnish tervahauta, literally meaning tar "grave"). It dates back to the early 17th century. The role of tar in people’s daily lives was significant, as tar was used not only as a wood preservative but also as a medicine against rashes and diseases.
However, until I started making my soap and looking for tar producers, I didn't know, there were people in Finland keeping the tradition alive.
🪵 Fortunately, I met at one cool event . she told me that these days there is a tar making in Sonka village nearby. I didn't wait to be invited twice and drove straight 35km to see the tar making in the process.
🪵 It was late evening when I arrived but I knew there would be volunteers keeping an eye on the tar throughout the whole night. I met two wonderful couples from the village in the moment of them passing the shift. It felt like, all of a sudden, I was inside of a tar black and white movie from the museum that I saw many years ago. 🪵 However, in , there was a new modern system with a pipe going down through the ground where the tar comes out through a convenient tap system with a sink to fill up the canisters. It's probably hard to imagine but I filmed also a short movie about it. most of the photos are snapshots from the video materials.
🪵 Now, since I found the tar, I wanna make my tar soap with it and of course, the movie about tar making! For now, you can see my tar soap photos from a couple of years ago made with Siberian birch tar and camomile tea 🫖

🍃 coffee break in the woods ☕️
🇫🇮 kahvisaippua

☕️ this soap is made with 100% olive oil. It's basically two different soaps mixed together. The dark park is made of strong coffee instead of water + an infusion of aromatic dark coffee on olive oil. The creamy part is made on oatmeal water + pure olive oil with a pinch of white clay ☕️

🫖 Whipped soap is my absolute obsession. I love to work with whipped butters. I like to see the result, the texture of aerated chocolate. This soap will be maturing for 6 weeks on the shelf of the workshop. It is made of 75% of luxury plant butters as well as organic olive oil, almond oil and my favourite castor oil. And of course, what I love in my plate I put in my soaps – Finnish oats and honey 🍯

SUOPURSU explained in this post. PART 1.
If you're wondering, what on earth is SUOPURSU and why the soap brand is called this way, here's the first part of the answer.
SUOPURSU is a Finnish name for Rhododendron tomentosum (Ledum Palustre). In English, it's commonly called Marsh Labrador Tea, Wild Rosemary and, sometimes, story-telling tea. SUOPURSU translated freely from Finnish could mean "bog's overflow". If you see this plant blooming on the bogs in June you will understand exactly the reason it's called so. Labrador Tea can be found in the Boreal climate with peaty soils, bogs, muskegs, moist conifer forests, and meadows. In Finland everyone knows this plant and, of course, the pine-camphor-citrus-like fragrance of it. Labrador Tea's aroma comes from essential oils such as ledol, palustrol and myrcene and can even give headaches to sensitive wanderers on the bogs.
In the past, people in Finland and Sweden used to wash insect vermin from clothes and get mice out of the house using Labrador Tea. It also has been used to treat rheumatism and skin diseases. Despite Labrador Tea's toxicity it has been cleverly used as a tea and flavouring beer and liquor. In the past, you could buy Labrador Tea as a herb from pharmacies in Finland. Today it is not used widely here but is exported to Central Europe for farmaceutical purposes.
So, this was a more "technical" side of the story. There's much more meaning behind choosing exactly this plant to represent our soap brand. Now we're working on the next YouTube video uncovering our personal relationship with this hardy plant. More IG posts explaining the world of SUOPURSU are on the way.
Please, share in the comments if it was something new to you or if you were familiar with this plant from before.
