33 YEARS OF AGAVE
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PEDRO!!
ONE PLANT, ONE DRUM, A LIFETIME OF INSPIRATION
On 3 November 1993, I built my very first drum from the dried flower stalk of an agave plant, guided by my mentor Pedro. That day marked the beginning of a journey whose true scope I could hardly have imagined at the time.
What started with a single drum gradually evolved into a lifelong commitment to craftsmanship, research, music and cultural exchange. Ten years dedicated to drum making, thousands of creations now present in 50 countries, encounters with artists and masters from different cultures, and journeys through Chile, Ethiopia and Brazil have continuously enriched my knowledge and broadened my perspective on this fascinating plant.
There is something particularly remarkable about the story of agave here in Almería: people have lived alongside this plant for centuries. It is deeply rooted in the Mediterranean landscape and our collective heritage, yet its true potential remains largely unexplored. A plant capable of thriving in the harshest conditions, remarkably resilient and incredibly versatile, with possibilities that go far beyond what most people imagine. And yet, across much of Europe, its potential is still waiting to be recognised.
Today, 33 years after that first drum, this journey has grown far beyond the boundaries of craftsmanship. Agave has become a bridge connecting people, cultures and continents. Everything I have learned over these decades – the experiences, encounters, experiments and stories – now comes together at our Agave Artisan Centre in Sorbas, which opened its doors three years ago, marking three decades since that very first drum. It is a place that brings this entire journey to life and carries it forward into the future, where tradition meets innovation and new ideas and international collaborations continue to take shape.
More than a craft, agave has become a way of life.
My heartfelt thanks to Pedro and to everyone who has been part of this journey: artists, musicians, masters, family, friends and travellers who, in one way or another, have helped shape it.
33 years on, the journey continues.
