When I look through old photos from India, I realise that very few of them are actually about furniture.
They are about people.
The people who welcomed me into their workshops, invited me into their homes, shared meals with me and, over the years, became much more than suppliers or business partners.
They became friends.
Looking back, I realise that the most valuable thing I have brought home from India was never a container of furniture.
It was the relationships.
Some of these people have been part of my life for more than thirty years.
Some have become what I can only describe as family.
My extended family.
My Indian sister.
My Indian brother.
What began through work grew into something far more meaningful.
We have shared meals, celebrations, challenges and countless memories. We have watched each other’s families grow and supported one another through different chapters of life.
From a shared love of craftsmanship and entrepreneurship came something even more valuable.
Trust.
Loyalty.
Friendship.
Every time I travel to India, I look forward to seeing these people just as much as discovering new furniture. Behind every cabinet, table, textile and handmade detail are skilled hands and lives filled with families, dreams and stories that have become intertwined with our own.
Maybe that is why Soulosofie feels the way it does.
Because in the end, it was never really about furniture.
It was always about people.
And for that, I will always be grateful. 🤎
