Another step forward in the making of this Colascione. In these photos you can see the rosette, the soundboard, and the very beginning of the neck taking shape — three elements that could not be more different from each other and yet have to work together as one in the end. Each of them demands its own time and its own attention, and right now the workshop belongs entirely to this instrument.

In the third drawer of my tool cabinet lives a collection of things I reach for every single day — scissors, pliers, tweezers, compasses and calipers, each one chosen for a reason and used with a purpose. They are the extension of my hands in those moments where precision is everything, where a millimetre too much or too little changes the voice of the instrument forever. Good tools do not make a good luthier, but a good luthier cannot work without good tools.

In the second draw, you can see the knives I use to build my instruments are made of laminated steel, hand-forged by Japanese master blacksmiths, and the moment you hold one you understand why — a perfect edge, a balance you simply can't mass-produce, and the feeling that someone put just as much craft into that blade as I try to put into every instrument that leaves my workshop.

New commission from the United States for a three-string colascione made of cherry wood, with the option of setting it up with two courses. Its sound is deep and resonant, with a strong rhythmic presence and clear projection, ideal for continuo and accompanying roles.

The Colascione is one of those rare instruments with a long and fascinating history, and building one is always a reminder of why I do what I do — every joint, every curve, every surface has to be right before it travels that far from my hands.

This is how gut frets are installed on a vihuela. The frets are tied directly around the neck using natural gut, allowing precise adjustment of their position to achieve accurate intonation. This traditional method provides flexibility and a direct connection to historical playing techniques, requiring careful placement and tension for optimal performance.
