Yesterday, The Original Charity Library and Bookshop took to the road and spent the morning at the Riurau Market in the Old Town of Jávea, helping to promote our little shop in Javea Park.

It was wonderful to chat with so many people, meet new faces, and spread the word about our library and bookshop, which is home to over 12,000 books. Many visitors were surprised to discover just how much we have tucked away in our cosy corner of Javea Park!

Tracey and Susana from our Saturday team were delighted to be joined by May, who is here on holiday and very kindly volunteered her time to help us for the morning. Thank you, May! ❤️

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat, bought books, picked up information, or simply showed an interest in what we do. Your support means so much to us and helps us continue raising funds for local charities and good causes.

If you haven't visited us yet, why not pop into our Library and Bookshop in Javea Park? With thousands of books covering every genre imaginable, there's something waiting for every reader.

📚 Your Library Book of the Week 📚

Every week we suggest a "book of the week" exclusively for our Library members. This week we've chosen something a little different inspired by a suggestion from our lovely volunteer, Su Gillespie, and one of our favourite customers, Adam Viggers. Here's a review from The Book Nook ( www.facebook.com/share/18uBg6R2Ce/ ) which describes Tuesdays with Norrie by Mitch Albom perfectly...

There is someone in your life who changed the way you see the world.

A teacher. A grandparent. A mentor. Someone older and patient and wise who looked at you when you were young and searching and saw something in you that you had not yet learned to see in yourself.

Think of them for a moment.

Now ask yourself the last time you called.

Mitch Albom had a Morrie Schwartz. His sociology professor at Brandeis University. A small, joyful, dancing man who held office hours like conversations and conversations like gifts and who told his students on the first day of class that they could call him by his first name - because life is too short for unnecessary formality, and because Morrie had already decided that the distance between people was the one distance worth spending your life closing.

Mitch graduated. Got busy. Got successful. Got the career and the apartment and the relentless forward momentum of a life that looks correct from the outside. Sixteen years passed.

And then one night in 1995 he turned on the television and saw Morrie being interviewed by Ted Koppel on Nightline. Morrie had ALS. He was dying. He was also, inexplicably, luminously, completely himself - cracking jokes and dispensing wisdom and weeping openly and laughing at his own weeping with the specific freedom of a man who has decided that dying is no reason to stop being alive.

Mitch picked up the phone.

What happened next - fourteen Tuesday visits to Morrie's house in West Newton, Massachusetts, conducted over the final months of an extraordinary man's life — is this book. Originally written to help pay Morrie's mounting medical bills. Published in a first run of twenty thousand copies that Mitch assumed he would be selling from the boot of his car for the rest of his life.

It sold seventeen million copies and has been translated into forty-five languages. It has been adapted into a film, a stage play, a podcast.

And none of that - not one number or accolade - tells you what it actually feels like to sit inside these pages.

Each Tuesday visits a different subject. Death. Fear. Aging. Marriage. Family. Forgiveness. The meaning of work. The meaning of love. Morrie holds nothing back and performs nothing. He cries. He laughs at himself crying. He has already made peace with what is coming and spends his remaining energy trying to give away everything he has learned before it is too late.

"Once you learn how to die," he tells Mitch, "you learn how to live."

He tells him that the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. That we are teaching the wrong things - that money matters more than love, that status matters more than kindness, that success is something you measure in the things you accumulate rather than the people you hold.

He says: build your own culture.

He says: love each other or perish.

He says these things while ALS is dismantling his body piece by piece, starting with his legs, moving upward, claiming him slowly and publicly while Mitch watches and takes notes and slowly, visibly, across fourteen Tuesdays, remembers who he actually is underneath the career and the apartment and the momentum.

It's a truly memorable, thought-provoking read. Come and borrow it before someone else does!

Our annual library membership costs less than €1 per week giving you access to this and thousands more great books.
