Our Story
Welcome to the Universal Bookshop Page! I have had the bookshop for seven years, how the time has flown! I remember when I first took over the shop it was full of old dusty second-hand books and I didn't know where to start. Before moving to the island I managed a Grade ll listed building which was owned by the community. Over the past 20 years, I had become a regular visitor to Mallorca especially Portals Nous. After suffering personal bereavements in 2011 I felt I needed something to fill the large void in my life. I knew that I would have to make a life-changing decision. So I looked around for what might interest me. I found an internet advertisement for the bookshop and booked a flight to Mallorca. I decided that this was the place for me. I returned to Mallorca six weeks later with my suitcase in my hand. Over the past seven years, I have turned the shop into a community hub! The shop is now bright and welcoming. We have added books in many other languages to our existing lending library. The stock includes a wide range of children's books from first books up to “A” level study books. (According to a survey in the U.K. teenagers who read good quality fiction whilst revising for exams achieve better results). My favourite time of the day is when the children come storming in to see me after school.
I have added yarn, patterns, needles, haberdashery and craft items to our stock. I also offer informal knitting and sewing classes for adults and children. I also offer a laminating and free gift wrapping service. I employ Debra Hart who manages the shop on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning. She is a tremendous asset to the business with her love of books and people.
