🛎📦: Monkey Shoulder incl. Tumbler 🎉

The Monkey Shoulder blended malt comes from William Grant & Sons. It is a blend of three malt whiskies sourced from the Glenfiddich, Balvenie and, for the most part, Kininvie distilleries. Monkey Shoulder is therefore an ideal opportunity to explore the flavours of Speyside distilleries at a lower price than usual. The name ‘Monkey Shoulder’ originates from traditional whisky production. In the past, the malt was turned by hand, which during long shifts often led to the workers’ arms hanging down and a hunched posture – similar to that of a monkey. Today, the name simply serves as a reminder of these original “Malt Men” and their hard work. It is also somewhat unusual that the names of the distilleries included in Monkey Shoulder are known. But who would say no to a blended malt from the popular and established distilleries Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie?

With the Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt, you also get a tumbler for the perfect drinking experience! 🥃

Casamigos Tequila Añejo 🌿

Casamigos Añejo is the tequila for anyone who likes it full-bodied - but doesn't want to compromise on style. This fine drop was born from the friendship between George Clooney, Rande Ge**er and Mike Meldman, who simply wanted to create their own, perfectly harmonised tequila. Casamigos Añejo is produced in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico - the heart of tequila. The base consists of 100% Blue Weber agaves that have been matured for at least 7 years before being harvested by hand by experienced jimadores (agave farmers). After cooking in traditional ovens, milling and mashing, the particularly long fermentation process of 80 hours follows - significantly longer than the average of 48 hours. This ensures more depth, complexity and character in the later distillate. The raw spirit is then slowly distilled twice so that all the flavours can develop perfectly. The Añejo is aged for 14 months in carefully selected ex-bourbon barrels made from American oak.

🥃 Lindores Abbey Distillery – the birthplace of Scotch whisky?

The history of Lindores Abbey dates back to 1191, when the abbey was founded by David, Earl of Huntingdon. The Benedictine monks were not only clergymen, but also traders and craftsmen – and turned Lindores into a prosperous place through trade and agriculture.

The year 1494 is of particular historical significance: the Scottish Exchequer Rolls contain the first known written mention of Scotch whisky, or ‘Aqua Vitae’. They document that Brother John Cor was commissioned by James IV of Scotland to produce Aqua Vitae from malt – a milestone in the history of whisky.

After centuries of decline, Drew McKenzie Smith, together with his wife Helen, brought whisky production back to this historic site. In 2017, distilling resumed on the abbey grounds for the first time in over 500 years.

Today, Lindores Abbey uniquely combines history, tradition and modern whisky production.

📢The Whisky.com Awards for April have been announced!📢
This month, no whisky actually made it onto the gold podium. However, we have selected two wonderful bottlings for the Silver and Bronze Awards.

🥈Wolfburn Vibrant Stills No. 8 - Hand Selected Oloroso Sherry Butts🥈
🥉Torabhaig Taigh🥉

🥈 This Wolfburn from the Vibrant Stills range is the 8th small-batch release from the collaboration with a premium German whisky importer. Two Oloroso sherry butts were used (Cask 116/2014 and 264/2015). Slowly distilled in small copper stills, it matured for over 10 years in sherry casks, developing aromas of dried fruit, dark chocolate and oak. Bottled at cask strength, it remains intense and complex, with a sweet, floral-underpinned sherry richness.

🥉 The Torabhaig Taigh Single Malt from the Isle of Skye combines elegance and smoke. On the nose, maritime notes, mild peat smoke and citrus. On the palate, herbs, vanilla and balanced smoke emerge, with a creamy, fruity sweetness on the finish. Matured in bourbon, refill bourbon and Madeira casks, it is both approachable and complex. Torabhaig is the first new distillery on Skye in 190 years; the building was created from a restored farmhouse by Mossburn Distillers.

What actually happens inside the cask?
The influence of wood, climate and time 🪵🌥️⌛️

Whisky is colourless when it first comes out of the still.
It is only in the cask that what we later come to love develops: colour, aroma and depth.

The wood makes all the difference 🪵
Oak imparts aromas – depending on its origin:
• 🇺🇸 American oak → vanilla, caramel, sweetness
• 🇪🇺 European oak → spices, dark notes
• Mizunara → exotic, coconut, sandalwood
And: whatever was in the cask before (e.g. bourbon or sherry) has a massive impact on the flavour!

Three things happen simultaneously in the cask 📊
1. Immaturity disappears
Sharp, alcoholic notes break down – usually over several years.
2. Aromas develop
Vanilla, wood, fruit – the whisky ‘draws’ them out of the cask.
3. Character develops
Distillate + cask = balance.
Too much wood? Dominant.
Too little influence? Flat.

Climate & time play a part 🌥️⌛️
The cask ‘breathes’:
• Heat expands the whisky
• Cold draws it back into the wood
Up to 2% evaporates each year – the famous ‘Angels’ Share’.

Time isn’t everything❗️
Longer doesn’t automatically mean better:
• An active cask works quickly.
• A spent one takes decades.

Good to know:💡
After 5–8 years, the typical ‘sharpness’ has usually disappeared – which is why very young malts are rare.

Conclusion 🗝️
No magic happens in the cask – just chemistry and physics, and it takes a lot of patience.
But that’s exactly what makes whisky so fascinating.

👉 Which influence do you prefer to taste – sherry, bourbon or something completely different?

The aroma of this Blair Athol is slightly sweet and shows a hint of smoke. Both are also more pronounced in the Taste. In the long finish, the sweetness is only subtly perceptible.
Under the Flora & Fauna Series, the owner Diageo bottles selected casks from a few distilleries, each individually as a Single Malt. The Flora & Fauna series is a true enrichment of the whisky scene and is regarded by collectors as an original bottling if there are no other original bottlings.
