‘Songs for the Deaf’ is a full-throttle, dust-coated ride through the heaviest corners of the QOTSA universe. Framed as a surreal radio road trip through the California desert, it fuses thunderous riffs, hypnotic grooves and unexpected turns, all held together by Josh Homme’s precision and Dave Grohl’s punishing drums.

It’s fierce, strange and endlessly replayable. A record built for driving down the desert highway with the windows down - even if you’re not going anywhere.

Released in 1975, 'Marcus Garvey’ isn’t just a cornerstone of roots reggae, it’s a spiritual and political awakening. Burning Spear, aka Winston Rodney, channels the legacy of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey into deep, dubby rhythms and hypnotic chants, offering resistance and pride in equal measure.
Heavy with atmosphere and conviction, it’s reggae stripped back to its essence.

With ‘Goo’, tore into the Nineties on their own terms - louder, sharper and cooler than just about anyone else. Their major label debut didn’t smooth the edges, it sharpened them. Off-kilter tunings, no-wave attitude and downtown art-school sneer, all wrapped up in that iconic Raymond Pettibon sleeve.

It’s the sound of a band in full stride, pushing boundaries while casually redefining what alt-rock could be. Fierce, stylish and forever ahead of the curve.

‘All That Is Over’ is a remarkable record in itself - a second album that pushes the dynamics of the band into richer territory, finding new space and nuance but also going harder than ever. However there’s a potency born from the “baptism of fire” beginnings of their current line-up that infuses SPRINTS’ second with a whole new energy. 
It’s into a landscape of duality and disparity, anger, ambition and a thousand feelings in between that ‘All That Is Over’ lays out its cards. Its title is taken from a lyric at the centre of “Beg”: an uncompromising slice of propulsive punk that seeks the cleansing of new beginnings. Written on tour buses, in soundchecks and very much in real time, it’s an album set against the backdrop of a litany of atrocities - the war in Gaza, the wildfires in LA, Trump’s executive order denying the rights of trans people - that sees SPRINTS trying to make sense of a society gone mad.

Few albums feel as singular and chillingly complete as 'Unknown Pleasures'. Joy Division’s debut didn’t just capture a mood, it built a world of shadowy spaces, echoing drums and haunted restraint. Stark, minimal, and deeply affecting, it set the template for post-punk and Peter Saville’s iconic white-on-black pulsar design cover art is as instantly recognisable as the music itself, a visual echo of the album’s eerie stillness.

Last week, Ian Curtis would have celebrated his 69th birthday and while his voice and vision still resonate in every tremor of “Disorder” and “She’s Lost Control", 'Unknown Pleasures' remains a stark, brilliant testament to a band whose influence echoes through every dark corner of alternative music.
