Anagama firing Shiro Oni Studio

feeling nostalgic, it’s been almost a year since i participated in the artist residency in japan, and somehow i never really shared much of the process. want to open that now, here..

remembering the celebration of coming together and creating, pure, raw work, patience, the chemistry of brutal elements: wood and fire, and results that are both unexpected and deeply satisfying.

altogether it took 3 days to glaze and load the kiln,
3.5 day of firing day and night and a village to feed us and entertain )

i brought a dozen pieces back home, and by now all of them have found their people, and i know each person who carries them, personally ❤️

that experience then allowed me to step out of my box, to open up to new ideas, which are now grounded into my practice.

coming back to these memories now feel much needed, as it’s so easy to sink into routine and stay with what feels clear and unchanging.

it’s spring - let’s step out and bloom again!

New pieces are now available in the online shop.

You’ll find cups, bowls, plates and more from the new ZEME collection, alongside a selection of other works.

Some pieces are offered on a pre-order basis — please don’t hesitate to order, if something speaks to you, it helps me plan my production more intentionally. At the moment, I’m focusing on developing new forms and will be recreating my core collection only on demand.

And if you are in Hamburg, feel free to stop by the Koppel 66 Spring Fair this weekend, 27–29 March, from 11:00 to 19:00. All studios in the house will be open, you’ll find mine on the second floor.

You’re also welcome to pick up your orders during that time.
Hope to see you there,
Nata

winter 2026 ~

This winter was long and white. The days in the studio seemed to fly by; I felt, somehow, as though I was keeping pace with them;

hours upon hours spent at the wheel, working toward what would be finished come spring. And truly, that winter felt like a beginning, a season for laying foundations.

- prototyping and finishing work for .hamburg
- prototyping and still working on a new glaze for
- preparing new work for upcoming fair at our
- making little collaboration with happen and
- bigger plates as a private order, also to add to my permanent collection

Looking back, it seems the work leaned heavily into whites and browns - quiet and earthy. But with spring came a longing for something brighter, a hunger for color that the long pale season had been quietly building all along. Hopefully soon…

Today, in memory of visiting one of the most touching places, the Japan Folk Craft Museum in Tokyo, I want to quote its founder Yanagi Soetsu, as it explains everything I felt being there and the path I hope to be approaching in my practice:

„(…) In the same way, all folk artisans, regardless of their lack of academic knowledge concerning their craft, are still capable of producing works of merit. They work as if this were the natural thing to do; they create as if this were the natural thing to do; they give birth to beauty as if this were the natural thing to do. They have entered the way of salvation through unconscious faith.

It is a path open to all.

And once they have entered this path, the creation of plain, natural beauty becomes a thing of ease, a matter of course. This natural, unforced beauty is the result of a kind of unconscious grace. This grace is a special privilege of craftsmen and leads them to a realm of blessed unawareness. Without consciously thinking whether something is good or bad, creating as if it were the most natural thing in the world to do, making things that are plain and simple but marvelous, this is the state of mind in which artisans do their finest work.

I think I can clarify this state of mind through an analogy. For human beings, walking is the most ordinary of activities. Even the most simpleminded person can walk well. But no one is ever praised for being a good walker, and no one takes special pride in doing so. This is how I would like to view the artisan’s state of mind when he is at work.

No matter how good or bad an artisan’s workmanship might be, the product is true folk art when it is made in this unconscious, natural manner.

Many of the magnificent works of the past were made in this free and unrestrained manner, as easy and thoughtless as walking. Such works were possible only because they were raised to the level of the ordinary. (…)”

– from Soetsu Yanagi Selected essays on japanese folk crafts.

The creative process is deeply satisfying, but there’s something special about seeing your work in its intended setting.

Last week’s visit to .berlin was a personal highlight. My porcelain bowls - the first pieces I was inspired to create after returning from Japan were being used for the first time.

What started as memories and experiences had become functional pieces, exactly as I’d envisioned.
The evening was made even better by the genuine hospitality of the .berlin team and their thoughtful attention to atmosphere and Berlins evening summer lighting.

There’s real satisfaction in watching your craft find its place in the world…

First steps —

I am slowly coming back to my practice and working on a new project for .berlin. I’m in the prototyping stage - the glaze and clay are already decided, but the shape is still evolving.

At the same time, I’m also taking my first steps to reconnect with something deep within.

So much has changed while I was in Japan. Taking time away from daily routines and familiar paths is a beautiful luxury - one I wish we all had the courage to allow ourselves. What has changed? Everything and nothing at once. I’ve returned to where I started, to a desire to create from an inner impulse, to ground it, and to play.

For now, I won’t be recreating my previous work, except on demand (you can preorder pieces in my shop). At this moment, I want to root more deeply into my inner voice and see what arises from there.

Thank you for following along 🕊️
