Day 5 of our 17th ART MATTERS online group exhibition – featuring a b s t r a c t works this summer. Italian artist VITTORIO BIANCHI (*1982, lives and works in Milan) is our fifth of nine finalists. Bianchi works with a wide variety of textiles, ranging from traditional Taiwanese silk and to modern, high-tech synthetic fibres. The central element of his art is the deliberate disruption of the surface. For the artist, these cuts and gaps are not an act of destruction, but one of revelation. They lay bare deeper layers and open up space for hidden memories that lie dormant within the fibres of the materials.

Statement (excerpt):
Vittorio Bianchi […] investigates the sleeping spaces of memory that flow inside the fibers, reviving them in the relief of a breath that regains possession of its legitimate interlude. His is a deaf gesture in which the phrasing woven into the voiceless history of the material echoes. The surface becomes sensitive skin, caressed by the revealing vehemence of the action that exposes its filaments, as if they were the rib of the anatomy of the eternal flow of history. […]

Day 4 of our 17th ART MATTERS online group exhibition, featuring a b s t r a c t works this summer. Today we are pleased to present a conceptual work by the South Korean artist HYUNGEE KANG (*1997 in Seoul, lives and works in Paris). Her sculptural installation, and her work in general, explores the emotional states that arise from ‘absence’ – that moment when an object or a living being is suddenly discarded, denied or removed. Using a personal visual language that – as shown here – combines hybrid glass sculptures with mounds of sand, she explores how being abandoned alters presence.

Statement (excerpt):
[...] My work seeks to render visible the emotional states that arise in this threshold – anxiety, solitude, apathy, and exhaustion – shaped by systemic violence yet often left unseen.
My hybrid sculptures, made with mainly glass, silicone and transparent textiles, explore the tension between fragility and ubiquitous cruelty. Their translucent layers create dreamlike yet impenetrable forms, subtly tinges with irony. [...]

Day 3 of our 17th ART MATTERS online group exhibition – featuring  a b s t r a c t  works this summer. American artist ADAM DU SHOLE (*1980, lives and works in Greenville, South Carolina) is our third of nine finalists. His work, which oscillates between painting and sculpture, draws on folk traditions of the past and offers a new context for ideas that are often pushed into the background. Du Shore creates works that appear both ancient and futuristic, inviting the viewer to look more closely and recognise how playfulness and personal history intertwine at every level.

Statement (excerpt):
My work represents a
collection of artifacts; slivers of my past retold using a language of ancient motifs and folklore. I’m interested in the human tendency to memorialize our experiences in the material world, from the patterns on a piece of china to the tchotchkes adorning our mantles.
These knick-knacks exist beyond their creator’s intent and without context, inviting us to wonder about their meaning and origin. […]

Day 2 of our 17th ART MATTERS online group exhibition, featuring  a b s t r a c t  works this summer. Today we are delighted to present a sculptural work by the Italian artist EMILIANO COLETTA (*1974, lives and works in Rome). Coletta works primarily in sculpture, a medium through which he conveys individual emotional experience and complex poetic and socio-critical ideas. His submitted work, shown here, for example, deals with the fissures in the social fabric that are revealed when workers’ strikes are broken.

Read more about Emiliano Coletta and his work on our website – link in bio!

Statement (excerpt):
When strikes are neutralized, a fracture is revealed in the social structure: the worker, once a collective subject, becomes isolated, ordered back to work and made flexible to the point of breaking.
‘Preposto all’interruzione di pubblico servizio’ arises from this contradiction.
[…]
In this form, social belonging is not a pacified identity. It is a fragile condition, grounded in labour, rights, access and a shared responsibility.

Today we are launching our 17th ART MATTERS online group exhibition – featuring a b s t r a c t works this summer – with a presentation of the submitted work by the German artist BEN POST (*1988, lives and work in Cologne). His painting is wild and bold; it almost resembles a collage and, through the interplay of grey and bright colours, tranquillity and dynamism, constantly reveals new details. It is all about rhythm, freedom and the desire to reinvent oneself time and again.

Statement (excerpt):
For me, painting is a refuge into the unknown. A place where I allow myself to be swept up in moments that feel alive.
Sometimes calm, sometimes wild, but always honest.
[...]
My paintings emerge from a similar feeling to that of music: from rhythm, movement and emotion. Colours become sounds, shapes become beats, and the process itself becomes a kind of free improvisation. I leave room for chance, for changes and for whatever develops whilst I’m painting.

Following our 17th Open Call for Artists, we are launching our new ART MATTERS online group exhibition tomorrow Monday 10 August at 6 pm CET.

From all the applications received, we have selected 9 finalists who will be presented one after the other here on Instagram and on our website with their submitted art works until 18 August.

Every day at 6 pm, a new name and a new artwork from the shortlist will be presented, so that the exhibition gradually comes together as a whole.

The presentation of our Top 9 will be rounded off by the ‘Honourable Mentions’ in our daily Instagram Stories, in which we will honour the works of selected artists who narrowly missed the final selection (more precisely, 27, which will be published in our Instagram Stories from 11 to 19 August, 3 per day between 12 noon and 6 pm).

FINAL DAY
On Wednesday 19 August at 5 pm and at 6 pm, we will announce the two winners of our ART MATTERS 17 open call competition – they will be invited to take part in a group show at our Cologne gallery on the theme of ‚a b s t r a c t’. The opening is scheduled for March 2027.

ABOUT
In his work, Richard Helbin (*1980 in Poland, lives and works in Düsseldorf) focuses, among other things, on reviving traditional textile techniques such as bobbin lace-making, embroidery, weaving and crochet, which once shaped entire towns and regions but have now lost all economic significance. He transforms these crafts into a contemporary context, for example by casting crocheted sculptures in bronze or creating meticulously bobbin-laced miniatures. The result is works of art that go far beyond mere craftsmanship: through his individual iconography and deliberate play with contextual meanings, they become socially critical artworks.
Helbin interweaves these traditional techniques with emotionally charged, q***r images of longing, thereby evoking values and ideas that oscillate between nostalgia and social relevance. His works connect past and present, craftsmanship and concept, sensuality and critical reflection in a multi-layered way.
