66sick Bmx rider with a spezial history how is life changed during cancer and how the sport helped him to get over this!
My first BMX life started in 1983 and continued until 1994.
In this phase I became German Champion twice and my highlight was the third place at the Worlds 1991 in Norway. A great time in which my idol was the 5 times World Champion Greg Hill. I was impressed by his style and power.
At the end of 2009, heard that there are senior cruiser categories, I was immediately "on fire" again and start my second BMX life.I I trained a lot with my best BMX buddy Henry Pawlak from Berlin, we know each other since 1984 and spent every spare minute to improve and structure our training plans and bikes.
In total, that was another 5 German championship titles, 4 podiums at the European Championships, 15 podiums at the Euro League and the 2nd place at the worlds 2011 in Copenhagen.
But in 2017 I got a little BMX tired. I decide stopped BMX racing with my 7th German Championship. After one year, I realized, without BMX life it just doesn't work.
I want to restart at the worlds 2019 in Zolder. My third BMX life. While preparation to Zolder, I got a horrible Diagnostic in the Hospital: Cancer in two cases.
Twice death was knocking on my door.
I lost 20kg, but I remembered what I can do: Sports, sports, sports. The toughest race of my life has begun.
I fought my way back to life. During chemo and radiotherapy, the doctors looked at my fitness in disbelief " this is incredible, it's a miracle ".
That was a hard time with lots of blood, sweat and tears.
But if there's one thing I've learned from this:
Sport has always helped me in my whole life and now it has saved my life.
But it's also only possible with friends and family who support you.
My very special thanks go to Henry Pawlak, my sons Jonas and Jakob and of course, my wife Veronique who motivated and supported me every day and always believed in me.
With Henry I visited the Worlds in Zolder 2019 and was again infected with the BMX virus.
I started to train BMX in a structured way again....
