On June 12, 1817, German inventor Karl von Drais took a ride that would help change transportation forever.

Traveling through Mannheim, Germany, on a two-wheeled invention he called the Laufmaschine (“running machine”), von Drais demonstrated what is widely recognized as the world's first bicycle-like vehicle. Unlike modern bicycles, it had no pedals or chain—riders propelled it forward by pushing off the ground with their feet.

Nicknamed the “dandy horse,” the invention offered a faster alternative to walking and laid the foundation for the bicycles we know today. Though simple by modern standards, von Drais’ ride marked the beginning of a transportation revolution that would influence mobility for generations.
