Beijing - what a fantastic city!

🩵💜The Buddha on the Hill near Sapporo is a beautiful, serene space.

The top of the statue rises amidst a sky of scented lavender, where skylarks and their songs rise and fall.

A mirror-like pool reflects the sky as you approach.

🌿🩵We drove east to west across Hokkaido, staying at a cute onsen set high in the Asahidake Daisetsuzan mountains.

🐻🦊🦌Hokkaido is amazing for wildlife.

We saw kitakitsune foxes, deer, and a huge ambling brown bear!

We saw white tailed sea eagles and black kites, and small birds like woodpeckers, nuthatches, and kingfishers.

We discovered a beautiful new bird that was unlike anything we'd seen before - a longtailed jaeger.

And we saw porpoises, hump backed whales and orcas.

And as for the forest and riverside sounds! It's like that line from The Tempest: 'the isle is full of noises, sounds and sweet airs'.

Melodic, twittering, and whooping bird calls and loud shimmering cicadas fill the wild ways🦌🦊🐻

🐦🩵💚🌿 Can you see the wooden house on the left above the far shore of the lake?

This is the wonderful house in Poroto where we stayed. It's a house devoted to birdwatching, with Japanese bird guides and a telescope in the front room overlooking the fantastic lake.

The kind owner is a bird artist, and his paintings decorate the house.

We ate breakfast while watching cranes on the lake.

Sea fog rolls off the coast inland in this part of Hokkaido, and so the house looks very atmospheric! 🐦🩵💚🌿

I loved the iris garden at Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens.

The iris weren't in full flower but the flower heads were spears of blue gray against the yellower green blade-like leaves.

There was even a thatched teahouse and a rustic boardwalk through the flowers.

It made me think of that gorgeous woodblock print by Kawase Hasui!💚
