By the late nineteenth century, the industrial revolution and mass mechanization seemed to have drained the age of creative energy. In a materialistic society, jewels inevitably became mere status symbols....
In Art Nouveau, the jeweler's aim of art was to suggest reality, which became more lifelike - or rather full of life - than an exact copy, to provide a veiled essence of reality, like a dream

y haze and to find a deeper relationship to nature, to its very force and sensuality.....
Industrial growth, science, technology and military might had all imposed a masculine character on the nineteenth century. For Art Nouveau artists, woman represented all that was missing from such an imbalance, and the extensive use of female body became almost an invocation for the restoration of harmony in life and art. the whole female form, n**e and beautiful, vividly expressed the freedom of the new movement.
