It's been a while since I posted here as my attention has been taken up with other matters....however, I have a BIG SALE on for beers that are past their sell-by date but are still in perfect condition. I need to clear stock as I am working on one or two new things that I hope to be able to update you on early in the New Year....watch this space. In the meantime, why not treat yourself to a few different beers for Hogmanay/New Year?

Friday 7th June, Whisky and beer tasting dinner at Restaurant Heitersberg, near to Spreitenbach.

There will be an excellent menu of 8 courses prepared by Chrigi and his team, whisky to accompany each course and fine Scottish beer available throughout the evening.

I will be piping-in the evening and at various intervals during the dinner.

These are really great evenings and an opportunity to enjoy excellent food, whisky and beer, from the beautiful location in Heitersberg with stunning views back towards Zurich and the airport. Don't just take my word for it, reserve a place now!

Calliing all lovers of things Scottish!

On 24th February the British Beer Shop will be at Restaurant Heitersberg in Spreitenbach, http://www.restaurant-heitersberg.ch/, for an evening of fine dining, malt whisky, Scottish beers and music.

It will be an exceptional evening and places can be reserved in advance by contacting Chrigi and Evelyn at the restaurant. The price will be around Sfr. 160 - 170 per person and will include an aperitif, dinner, whisky, beer and music from the bagpipes!

Let's be honest now, winter is the time for robust, dark beers consumed around a roaring fire and this wee bottle packs a real punch. It is without doubt one of the nicest stouts that I have tasted in some time. Stouts are much more versatile that their image belies and they go extremely well with many different foods.

For example, they go really well with a nice creamy Stilton and there is currently a pretty good example on sale in Lidl, (for a very reasonable price I might add), but where stouts really come into their own is when paired with chocolate and especially chocolate desserts.

The roasted malt and chocolate flavours of the stout really compliment the sweetness of chocolate itself and provide a nice counterbalance. This example is not too strongly flavoured, is quite light and very drinkable.

In fact, why not skip the coffee and just opt for a wee bottle of this?

A wee bit of research on the South African craft scene, which is in good health. Not sure that the IPA is better than the Wooha I have in stock, but I may just be a little biased!

I thought that it would be a good idea to start posting some recipes and ideas for food that go nicely with beer.

IPAs are really versatile as they can complement a lot of dishes, especially those that are a bit spicy. The bubbles are great for cleansing the palate and the refreshing, zesty flavour of the hops can cut through fats and heavier flavours.

The Wooha IPA is a case in point. It is a little bit stronger in alcohol but tastes light and refreshing and because it's bottle conditioned it produces some great carbonation and has a long shelf life.

So far, this has been tested with some spicy sweet and sour and a robust curry and has not been found wanting in either case!

If you've sampled a bottle, let me know your thoughts and let's see if we can expand the appreciation of fine beer and its accompaniment with good food!
