The original Kildonan Community MCC Thrift Shop had its origin in 1972 on 499 Jamison Avenue. Due to increasing customer demand for used goods and increases in donations, the Thrift Shop has moved twice in the past five years. From its original Jamison Avenue location it moved to 590 Washington Ave, then to its current location at 445 Chalmers. Choosing to remain in the same general neighborhood,

the Thrift Shop serves the local community of the Kildonans and Elmwood by providing access to a large variety of affordable and quality items ranging from clothing & shoes, furniture, toys, electronics, books, records, jewelry, appliances, antiques and a whole lot more! The remarkable success of the Kildonan Thrift Shop rests solely on its 280+ caring, committed and passionate volunteers, and the generous donor community which includes many local businesses who provide goods and resources. The Thrift Shop is governed by a board of directors whose primary object it is to achieve a place of excellence in the stewardship of used goods in support of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and its assistance to the local and international communities. MCC works in areas such as education, health, agriculture , peace and justice issues, and job creation. We are grateful to be a part of the MCC Thrift Shop Network that not only provides quality second-hand items at reasonable prices to the people in our community, but that also supports the relief, development and peace work of MCC around the world.

✨Behind the scenes with Karen ✨

Karen has been volunteering at KMTS for the past four years and has become a familiar and much-loved part of our community. With an incredible 2,094.30 hours of service, she was recognized as one of our Top 10 Volunteers by Hours Contributed last year.

Karen can most often be found in the Gardening and Pets department, she also helps with LEGO and live plants from home. Her cheerful presence and steady commitment have become a valued part of Wednesdays and Fridays life at KMTS. 

Karen’s connection to MCC goes back much further than her time at KMTS. After the Second World War, her parents received support from MCC as they rebuilt their lives. Growing up, Karen heard many stories about the care and assistance her family received during those difficult years. Because of that history, MCC has always held a special place in her heart.

When her daughter Lindsay was serving as Volunteer Coordinator at KMTS, she invited Karen and her husband, John, to volunteer at the store. And Karen and John they were the first Volunteers recruited by their daughter.

What Karen enjoys most about volunteering is the people. She values the friendships she has made, the diversity of the volunteer and staff community, and the reminder that the work done at KMTS supports people both locally and around the world. For her, volunteering brings joy, purpose, and the satisfaction of doing something meaningful for others.

Outside of the store, Karen enjoys gardening, doing puzzles, and walking her rescue dog, Tequila, who came with that unforgettable name. I think its easy to guess her favourite colour, YES, it is green!  and if she could choose any superpower, she would love to travel through time and experience different periods of history.

Karen’s story is one of gratitude and giving back. The support her family once received through MCC has come full circle through the many hours she now gives to help others.

We are deeply thankful for her kindness, dedication, and the warmth she brings to KMTS every week.🙏
