In the beginning...
Moving from apartment to apartment then from house to house, the most common nuisance we encountered was the odd smell within the enclosures affecting the quality of breathable air around. Our initial instinct was to rely on technology and electronics such as air purifiers, humidifiers, air ionizers and other fancy gadgets that the stores had to offer. It seemed to work at first but racking up appliances and electricity bills could not just be the answer to this dilemma, there must be some other way something more natural and eco friendlier. This is when we turned to plants as an alternative.
Starting with succulents and cacti, smaller plants was our trial and error due to the small apartment place. They were aesthetically pleasing however it seems they were not enough to meet what we think would have freshened up our quarters. Slowly we added a bit larger and fuller succulents such as the jade plant. Having some success in propagation, we tried to add others into the mix such as the pilea peperomioides which gave us more confidence as they were hardy and easy to take care of not to mention pretty. At this point the balcony of our apartment looked like a mini nursery with all the growing pots and propagation trays filed in stack. We also brought some snake plants into the mix which then felt made the most impact to the quality of the air we were now enjoying.
This solution stuck with us as we moved to a house. Now we have in our collection tropical plants, plants of all shapes and sizes, from calatheas to pothos and even larger strelitzia, monstera and philodendrons. It seems the larger the leaves, the better the air gets purified. We are no close to being botanists so this just might be psychological for us. Nevertheless, it makes us feel good, clean, fresh and healthy. We began sharing this theory to our circle of friends then through a larger audience, facebook, and in a glimpse here we are now with a small startup. A hobby turned into an avenue of sharing what we have learned throughout our moving and how plants have been a part of our way of living.
