Here’s something I don’t think a lot of newer detectorists think about when they’re out swinging.

When you first start detecting, your brain is basically:

BEEP! DIG! WHAT IS IT?!
But after you’ve been doing this for years, you start paying attention to things other than the detector.

One of those things is the soil.

The colour, texture, moisture, different layers, and even how the dirt comes out of the hole can sometimes tell you something.

You may start noticing that the soil around a target looks different than the soil closer to the surface. Over time, you can start picking up little clues that might help you decide whether you're dealing with something relatively new… or something that's been hanging out underground for a VERY long time.

Is it a perfect science? Nope.

But it's one of those little things you start noticing after years of digging holes. Eventually, you're staring at dirt like some kind of archaeological detective.

BUT… there’s another reason you need to watch the soil!

DON’T DIG BONE-DRY GROUND! (I went out the other day and it was like this)

If the ground is super dry and there’s basically ZERO moisture in it, think twice before you start digging.

When the soil is that dry, cutting plugs can seriously damage the grass. That nice little plug you thought you were putting back perfectly might not survive the experience.

Sometimes that awesome signal is going to have to wait for another day.

Trust me… there will be another target.
Being a good detectorist isn't just about finding cool stuff.

It's about learning to read the ground, recognize when conditions aren't right, and leave the area looking like you were never there.

So next time you're out detecting…

Don't just watch the detector.

WATCH THE DIRT TOO!

And if you’ve been detecting for years, what are some things you’ve learned to look for in the soil that you never noticed when you were a beginner?

Drop them below! 👇

What is a Seeded Hunt?

If you've never been metal detecting before, or you just want to spend a fun day outdoors without all the planning, a seeded hunt is the perfect event!

Here's how it works:

We secure the location and get all the permissions, so you don't have to.
Before the hunt begins, we plant hundreds of prize tokens, coins, jewelry, and other exciting targets throughout the hunt area.
You grab your metal detector and start searching.
Every prize token you find is redeemed for real prizes, and you get to keep the coins and other treasures you recover!

No researching old maps.
No spending hours looking for a good location.
No asking landowners for permission.

Just show up, start swinging, dig some targets, and have an amazing day!

Seeded hunts are perfect for:
✅ First-time detectorists
✅ Families looking for a fun outdoor activity
✅ Experienced hunters who love the thrill of finding prizes
✅ Yummy food
✅ Anyone who wants to enjoy metal detecting without the hassle

Whether you've been detecting for years or you're trying the hobby for the very first time, everyone has an equal opportunity to find something great!

Every year I see people asking, "What makes Beach Bonanza different?"

Honestly... it's the people.

Sure, we don't have the biggest prize table in Canada, and that's okay. What we've always wanted to build is an event where everyone feels welcome, whether it's your first time picking up a detector or you've been at it for decades.

There's something pretty special about spending the day on the beach full of people who all share the same hobby. Complete strangers end up helping each other dig targets, celebrating great finds, swapping stories, and by the end of the event, you've made friends from all over Canada and the US.

That's what Beach Bonanza has become.

The prizes are fun. The finds are exciting. But years from now, I don't think anyone will remember who won what. They'll remember the laughs, the people they met, and the memories they made.

If you've been thinking about coming this year, we'd love to have you join us. Come swing your detector, have some fun, meet some amazing people, and be part of something we're really proud of.

Tag the friends you're bringing!
