It's Reef Awareness Day! Today encourages individuals and organizations alike to reflect on the fragile coral reef ecosystems and to take steps in order to preserve them. One such way to support coral reefs is to cut back on plastic use. Plastics are designed for durability. This durability makes them persistent in the environment, especially in marine systems. Once they enter the ocean system, plastics undergo physical, chemical, and biological processes at a very slow rate causing long degradation times which contributes to long-term pollution.
