Its that time of the year once again. She gets her one polish and wax which has kept this Seasport that I bought new in 1992 looking like new. Not my favourite job but gratifying when completed. Its a process that seems to work.

Todays wind forecast made me think that I should take my charter clients which included two young boys over to Sidney waters for some calmer water. The first part worked as the water was flat for 4 1/2 of the 5 hours. We released a couple of undersize prior to tide change then on the change we got into a quick 1/2 hour bite period. A couple of nice hatchery Chinook at 80 and 85 cm put smiles on the guests. They are tent camping and plan on a fresh salmon dinner tonight.

Today was the first day of Chinook retention in Sooke waters since April 1st. Unnecessary regulations that are totally destroying a business I began back in 1986. Everyone in the industry on the lower Island is in survival mode because of these rules. So today took some repeat clients out who are from Utah. We landed 5 nice Chinook all under the 80cm maximum size before 7:30 then switched to find some hatchery coho salmon. We ended up with 5 of those, released 2 wild ones and kept 2 pinks out of 15 or so we released. Also let go a couple dozen undersize Chinook.....all in 6 hours. Its been the same all summer long except we couldn't send visitors home with fish for the table which for most makes them book trips elsewhere.

The 2024 fall coho fishery has been stellar to date. The coho are bigger than average this fall and their numbers are very plentiful. Today's fishing results are on par with all trips this season. We played over 40 coho and kept 4 wild and 7 hatchery form 6 to 10 pounds. We have about another week to 10 days left before most move on to fresh water and the spawning beds. A great opportunity to get some fish for the winter.

There are lots of hatchery Coho and large Chinook around right now. We kept 10 hatchery Coho up to 6-7 pounds and released another 8 wild ones. We also released 2 Chinook up to 19 pounds and 2 7-8 pound sockeye. We also dropped another 2 Chinook before getting them to the boat...all in a 4 hour morning trip. We are out again tomorrow morning for 6 hours and hoping for similar results. Starting on Thursday August 1st each person will be able to retain 1 Chinook up to 80cm plus their 2 hatchery Coho.

Wow great fishing right now. Out on a full day trip yesterday with 4 guests and we played 12 springs to the boat and as per regulations took pics and let them go. Using spoons with single barbless hooks so all swam Way unharmed. Largest would have been 23 pounds. We released a doubleheader pair thT would have been 22 and 21 pounds. 3 more were 17-18 poind the rest 9-10 pounds. We also lost 3 more we never seen. We kept 2 hatchery coho and releSed 4 wilds. Flat calm water all day and aunny/warm. They are saying 30 C this weekend. If you like playing large Chinook salmon it is best to be here when they are!!!! I have open times.

This April and May we are allowed to keep one hatchery Chinook in the waters I fish in both Sidney and Victoria. This is the time of year some nice size chinook are available and in the past two seasons my largest went 27 and 24 pounds. Nice fish for early spring time. Tomorrow morning I’m heading for my Sidney stomping grounds to put some clients into these early season fish. As of June 1st until August 1st chonook will be non-retention as they have been the past 4 seasons.

Chinook fishing in Sooke is red hot right now. Lots of boats limiting out quickly with both early morning bites and afternoon flood tide action. If you have the ability to book a trip in the next few weeks and take advantage of this great fishing, give me a call. 250-213-3055
