Norwegian Wedding Spoons My name is David Western and I hand carve traditional and modern Norwegian wedding spoons.

My spoons are perfect for use at the wedding to symbolically unite the married couple at their first meal or during the cake cutting ceremony.

This one's a non-traditional but still pretty traditional Viking style Norwegian wedding spoon. This set was carved from an old recycled cabinet door panel. It's got a gorgeous tone and the wood is exceptional. It depicts a pair of Vikings along with their cuddly support dragons. A very rare and unusual set for sure!!

These two sets of Norwegian wedding spoons carved in willow wood are currently available if you know someone getting married soon. The large set is 400USD and the small set is 350USD (both +shipping). They are both 'fully loaded' sets with glibber faces, kolrosed bowls, intricately detailed chains and space on the backs for initials if desired. This lovely little Norwegian style spoon was carved for an anniversary rather than a wedding. It features a fusion style handle that incorporates both Welsh and Scandinavian symbols and motifs as well as a lovely Norwegian style chain link and sailors anchor. Each of the links in the chain contains a family member's initial. This is a seriously romantic spoon!

Not all Norwegian wedding spoons feature double bowls joined by a length of wooden chain. As this little facsimile of a museum piece illustrates, they can be single bowled and much simpler in design. I really love the little linked blocks at the crown which I think are VERY romantic and symbolic! Lots of room on this one for some personalization on the handle!!

In the old days, young men would go to extraordinary lengths to carve elaborate, courting and wedding spoons. No effort was spared and the spoons were often extravaganzas of frivolity, frippery, uselessness and sheer unbridled passion. Although it may seem like a dead art today, in the words of Miracle Max, it's "only MOSTLY dead."

A little bit of experimentation! I decided to try something a bt radical with the chain and left a long section clear for some romantic engraving. I also used two handle shapes that are traditional courting spoons but weren't seen on wedding spoons. I know it won't be to everyone's taste, but I like it!

Although it is traditional to put little 'faces' into the lozenges at the crown of the spoon handle, many folks prefer to place their initials there instead. On this pair, we have initials on the front of the handles and the wedding date on the back.
