A study suggests that English ivy (Hedera helix) can significantly improve indoor air quality by removing up to 94% of airborne f***l matter and 78% of airborne mold in just 12 hours. This evergreen plant, commonly used as an ornamental houseplant, possesses natural air-purifying qualities due to its ability to absorb particulate matter through its leaves.
The study highlights how English ivy's dense foliage acts as a natural filter, trapping microscopic particles like f***l matter and mold spores that can circulate in indoor environments, especially in poorly ventilated spaces. These particles, often released from sources like bathrooms or damp areas, can contribute to respiratory issues and allergies.
The plant’s effectiveness is attributed to its large surface area and the microscopic structure of its leaves, which capture and retain pollutants. Additionally, English ivy is low-maintenance, thriving in various light conditions, making it a practical choice for homes. However, the study emphasizes proper care, as overwatering can lead to mold growth on the plant itself.
While promising, these findings require further validation to confirm the extent of English ivy’s air-purifying capabilities across diverse indoor settings. Incorporating such plants could complement ventilation and filtration systems for healthier indoor air.
