We are immensely grateful to Fells House for welcoming us to curate Dialogue of Lineage within this West Coast Modernist landmark, originally conceived by Ron Thom in 1959 and transformed through D'Arcy Jones Architects’ reverent 2025 continuation. With a level of detail so quiet and refined, the threshold between historic structure and modern intervention completely dissolved.

Architecture is at its best when it is lived in, shared, and placed in dialogue with art. Honoring this intent, Addition treated this house as a living canvas. Placing our roster of contemporary artists, makers, and historical works within its architectural walls created an intimate bridge between past and present, a dialogue across generations of craft, form, and design.

As Ron Thom once reflected, “Any form of design is locked in time... it has no choice but to reflect the thoughts and attitudes that surround it when it is being formed.”

To the artists, makers, and estates who contributed to this vision, and to everyone who came through: thank you for bringing your energy into this iconic environment.

Warhol, Koons, and Holzer meet the demolition derby. Three vehicles from the legendary BMW Art Car program, rendered wrecked and stacked in new oil paintings by Marcus Bowcott.

This is "Chain and Go Justice," our current exhibition of new oil paintings and bronze sculpture by Bowcott, the artist behind Trans Am Totem, the city's iconic public monument (gifted to Vancouver by Chip and Shannon Wilson in 2019, reinstalling this year at Granville and 4th as Trans Am Rapture).

The centerpiece painting depicts the actual cars from the legendary BMW Art Car program, works by three of the most significant artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, rendered wrecked and stacked, a meditation on the automobile as ritual object: emblem of freedom, identity, mobility, and aspiration, now twisted into a monument to its own collapse. The motif continues in solid bronze, where crushed cars intertwine with human figures and birds, alongside a new series of cars raised on stilts, orange blossom branches blooming straight out of the wreckage.

It's a monumental summer for Bowcott across the province. His "Stacked Car Sundial Bird Bath" is on view now at Surrey Art Gallery, and this August two paintings from this body of work, "Chain and Go Justice" and "Full-Weld Wrath," both drawn from the demolition-derby culture of Hope, BC's Brigade Days, take over the city as 66"x44" backlit bus shelter installations for 20 Faces.

With the FIFA World Cup taking over Vancouver right now, it's the perfect time to surface something rare.

In 1986, the Canadian Men's National Team qualified for their first-ever World Cup. To mark the occasion, New Leaf Editions produced an exclusive limited edition etching series with four celebrated Canadian artists: Marcus Bowcott, Doug Biden, Gordon Smith, and Arnold Shives, each creating a work that captured the magnitude of that historic moment.

This is Break Through by Marcus Bowcott. It captures the momentum of Canadian soccer arriving on the world stage, a work so significant that it was included in Team Canada's official collection.

We have a vault find: only 14 signed and numbered examples remain from the original edition of just 40 prints, all preserved in pristine condition.

The Weight of a Line: Bryan Ryley & Ben McLeod

"A painting is a sum of destructions," Pablo Picasso famously observed. In this presentation, ADDITION becomes an active site of memory, material exploration, and structural reconstruction.

The exhibition is anchored by Bryan Ryley’s monumental canvas, Sum of Destructions, previously exhibited at the Kelowna Art Gallery in 2010. At the painting's core DNA is a fragment of art history rescued from a tiny magazine clipping: the hand holding a broken dagger from Picasso’s anti-war masterpiece, Guernica. Scaling this emblem of trauma and resistance to an architectural magnitude, Ryley utilizes Paul Klee’s philosophy of "taking a line for a walk," allowing the historic, heavy outlines to fracture, dissolve, and re-emerge through cadmium yellow brushstrokes that carry the gaze across the monumental work.

This graphic deconstruction finds its physical, three-dimensional counterpart in the brutalist steel sculptures of Ben McLeod. Forged from dark, industrial iron, McLeod's sharp, looping geometries cut through the gallery space like the skeletal remains of a modern monument.

Staged with deliberate rawness, featuring Ryley's massive diptych work on board propped by a cinder block against the gallery's own board-formed concrete walls, the exhibition moves past mere decoration. It stands as a powerful dialogue between two mediums, exploring how we inherit the shards of the past and forge them into structures of enduring grace.

ADDITION is proud to announce the representation of contemporary artist Marcus Bowcott.

If you have spent time in Vancouver, you are undoubtedly familiar with Marcus’s work. He is the mind behind Trans Am Rapture, the monumental 33-foot public sculpture of real cars stacked high atop an old-growth cedar tree that formerly stood near Science World.

Featuring a vertical fleet of salvaged vehicles, including a vintage BMW and a classic Mercedes-Benz, the landmark stands as a profound commentary on consumer culture and the environment. It became a permanent part of the city’s civic collection through a generous gift from philanthropists Chip and Shannon Wilson, founders of Lululemon.

While the city prepares to unveil the sculpture’s highly anticipated new permanent location, ADDITION invites you to explore the artist’s latest studio practice.

Structural Brutalism Meets Conceptual Craft: Nolan Talbot-Kelly's Slotted Series

From Vancouver’s construction sites to the gallery floor, Nolan Talbot-Kelly () bridges the gap between industrial infrastructure and functional art. By pulling from the language of the built environment, such as fasteners, brackets, and structural supports, he reworks utilitarian "offcuts" into lighting and objects that feel both raw and refined.

The Slotted Series (featured) is a clear look into this process. These luminaires lean into their assembly by celebrating the bolts and perforated metals that give them structure.

Beyond the form, the series is engineered for atmosphere. Featuring dim-to-warm technology, each piece transitions seamlessly from a clean, functional light to a sunset-hued amber (1800K). This warmth softens the brutalist edges of the work, proving that even the most rigid industrial remnants can be transformed into soulful, aesthetic statements.

SUPER DENSE: 1957 – 2026

In this Speculative Archive, Andres Aramburu explores the art of accumulation. The salon hanging serving as a fictional biography of a collector whose acquisitions span seventy years of material history, demonstrating how a life lived among objects creates a unique, high-pressure dialogue.

SUPER DENSE is an intentional collision of hierarchies. It is a space where the storied legacy of Abstract Expressionism meets the bold, graphic energy of modern icons. Within this landscape, the historical gravitas of Motherwell and Siebner sits alongside the inventive and the hyper-tactile:

- The industrial trompe-l'œil and inverted Warholian homages of Douglas Coupland.
- The iconic pop-lexicon of Takashi Murakami.
- The material subversions of Ben Skinner, featuring 24k "Golden Girls" and "Wispy Whispers" crafted entirely from fake eyelashes.

Through paint, clay, and collage, this hang celebrates the "gathered object," proving that seven decades of disparate voices can find harmony in a single, compressed space.

Bryan Ryley is playing a high-stakes game with history. Educated in the 1970s at Pratt and a seminar leader at the Whitney Museum’s Graduate program, Ryley’s 1996 series is a provocative reckoning with the New York giants who shaped his early practice.

These are self-portraits of a man outrunning his own education. Ryley uses the grit of graphite and the opaque weight of gouache to pin down the fluid, ghostly "cool" of the mid-century idols. It’s all about the friction: the heavy tooth of the rag paper catching the charcoal, the way the ink bleeds and then stops dead against a flat plane of color.

It’s a beautiful, gritty reckoning. Ryley isn’t burying the masters to forget them; he’s clearing the room so he can hear his own pulse.

LEATHER DOG LOVERS 🐕🏛️

Ben Skinner is the mind behind every Aritzia window. For this series, he has archived seven specific breeds as heavy, brutalist artifacts.

These pieces are built to be seen in person. Ben used optic glass cabochons that act as a lens—magnifying the vintage stamps in incredible detail when you’re head-on, then distorting and warping them as you walk past.

It’s a massive celebration of materials: vintage black-and-white photos matted with hand-crafted saddle leather, all set into 1.5-inch slabs of poured plaster and paper pulp. They are thick, raw, and completely obsessive.
