Sunday Data Dive Vol. 10 🤔 📈 ~ Pettersson YG vs Svechnikov YG
The NHL Playoffs haven't been too kind to NHL superstars so far this year. Come to think of it, they haven't been for quite some time. Fortunately, there is still some fire-power left despite losing McDavid, Draisaitl, Crosby, Malkin, and Matthews. Leading the front alongside MacKinnon, Pastrnak and Kucherov are Petey and Svech - two sophomores who have already made a difference this post-season. In this data dive, we'll look at their head to head card performance, as well as get a feel for the kind of impact a good playoffs can have on a player's card stock value.
In the last 90 days, there's been some strong growth on both players' gem mint Young Guns. Despite Petey's YG reaching a 7 day average of $330, the edge goes to Svech. Petey YGs have grown 65% and 13% on the PSA 10 and BGS 9.5, respectively. Some solid growth, but not quite as impressive as the 82% and 130% average growth observed on Svech YGs. There weren't any Pristine Petey's to hit the market in this period, but there were a couple of Svechnikovs that sold right before most of his stuff spiked.
Playoff bump. Both Svech and Petey Young Guns have benefited from positive playoff performances. This is reflected in the recent PSA 10 growth rate. Svech is hot right now, growing 59% growth in the last 30 days. This follows a few months of positive (but average) growth. Petey growth is picking up some steam, seeing a 27% and 26% growth rate in back-to-back months. Before that, Petey's YG performed on par with the GOAT15 index. Compared to the GOAT15, the recent growth stands out. Perhaps we should expect this type of growth compared to an index of the best players though, considering most of the top guys are no longer playing for the 2019-20 Stanley Cup.
