Would you break almost all of the buds off of your dahlia plants??

Seems crazy right? Unless you are a farmer…..

This practice is called disbudding. We break the side shoots and side buds off of our dahlia plants, so that the plant won’t waste any energy opening those smaller side blooms, instead putting all of it’s energy into creating one large central bloom.

These large central blooms make extra nice cut flowers, and the practice doesn’t harm the plant at all. These large central more you cut your dahlias, the more they will bloom over the season. While you might have a few fewer flowers, the blooms you harvest will be larger.

This practice doesn’t apply equally to all flowers, it’s most commonly used on dahlias and on certain varieties of chrysanthemums.

If you’re a home gardener, feel free to experiment and give it a try, if you’d like some larger flowers. With that said, more importantly than disbudding your dahlias in your home garden, you’ll want to be sure to just continue to cut your flowers and deadhead them over the season. The more you cut the blooms, the more blooms you’ll have.

For those wondering about how we have Dahlias flowering already, we are farming in zone 5B here in Southern Ontario, and these Dahlias were planted as tubers (not pre sprouted) in an unheated hoop house in late March. The hoop house, even without any heat, adds an extra layer of warmth and brings the crop on about six weeks earlier than we would have it outdoors.

This is the earliest we’ve ever had Dahlia‘s in bloom, and it’s so exciting to be enjoying them already!

Why do peonies vary so much in pricing?

It can be confusing, right?

In some places, you’ll see peonies priced at $2/stem, in other places you’ll see peonies priced at $8-12/stem.

As smaller growers, it’s that time of year where we sometimes see larger growers selling peonies below wholesale price directly to retail customers.

What accounts for such a large range of prices?

We know that as customers you want to make sure you get the best value, and as growers, we want to bring you the highest quality stems.

Our favourite crop of the year is now in bloom….Peonies!!

Come and get your first peony fix of the season! Our farmstand is stocked with these beautiful blooms, all cut from our field just last night! Truly, it doesn’t get any fresher than that.
