In this video, I’m experimenting with lava rock as an aquarium substrate! 🪨🌱

I’ll show you how I set up a 5 gallon aquarium with a 1-inch deep lava rock substrate, including how I prepared and arranged the substrate for the tank.

The goal of this experiment is to see how lava rock works as an aquarium substrate and how it performs over time in a small planted aquarium setup.

Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦😁

At first glance of my Bucephalandra Dark Skeleton King, the older leaves might look like they’re dying because of the holes and wear. But don’t rush to remove them just yet.

As long as those leaves are still green, they’re still contributing to photosynthesis, producing energy that helps support the growth of the entire plant. Nature is efficient, and even aging leaves continue to serve a purpose until the plant is ready to let them go.

The real sign of a healthy Bucephalandra isn’t perfect old leaves. It’s healthy new growth. 🌱 As you can see, the younger leaves are emerging dark, clean, and full of life. That’s a strong indication that the plant is adapting well and growing as it should.

3 months can make a huge difference. 🌿

A lot of people ask me when Bucephalandra starts showing its true colors. This is a good example. The “before” and “after” aren’t the exact same plant, but they came from the same batch and had the same coloration when I first got them.

Fast forward 3 months, and you can really see how much they’ve changed. The leaves became darker, the colors became richer, and the overall shape looks more mature.

One thing I’ve learned is that you can’t judge a Buce by how it looks when you first receive it. Give it stable water parameters, time to adapt, and a little patience. Most of the magic happens after it’s fully settled underwater.

This is exactly why growing Bucephalandra has become one of my favorite parts of the hobby. Watching them transform over time is incredibly rewarding.

Every time I do maintenance on my tank, I find myself slowing down and appreciating the little details. Watching these Bucephalandra settle into the wood, push out new leaves, and slowly mature reminds me why I fell in love with this hobby in the first place.

For beginners, don’t worry if your Buce grows slowly. Focus on keeping your tank stable, avoid frequent changes, and let nature do its work. Some of the most beautiful plants in our aquariums are the ones that took months to become what they are today.

Building a slice of nature inside a glass box is more than keeping plants. It’s creating something alive that evolves every day. And honestly, that’s the part that keeps me hooked.

Another plant that got some maintenance today. 😁

Every time I look at this one, I get hooked by its unique shape and colors. It’s one of those plants that always stands out no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

One thing I’ve noticed with Bucephalandra is that the best colors and leaf shapes really show up when the plant is healthy and fully settled underwater. That’s why I always focus on keeping stable water parameters and avoiding big changes in the tank.

This 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝗼 (𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲) has been grown slowly and patiently in a stable environment. I provide constant plant maintenance, moderate lighting, good flow, and avoid making sudden changes to the tank. Bucephalandra rewards patience. Healthy roots and steady growth will always outperform fast growth.

For beginners, remember:
✅ Stable water is more important than perfect water
✅ Avoid constantly moving your Buce around the tank
✅ Give it time to adapt and develop its submerged form
✅ Healthy rhizomes = healthy plants

One of the reasons I love wild-type Bucephalandra is that every plant develops its own unique character as it matures underwater. The colors, leaf shape, and texture continue to improve with time.
