We thought it was just a little cold… until it wasn’t.
We moved closer to the mountains last winter, and hiking quickly became our thing.
Every weekend, it was the same routine. Bundle up, pick a trail, laugh about how cold it was going to be. Cold fingers were just part of it — or so we thought.
One day, halfway through a hike, I noticed my partner’s hands didn’t look right. They weren’t complaining. No pain. Just pale, stiff, quiet. The kind of quiet that makes your stomach drop a little.
I pulled out my phone to check the trail… and realized my own fingers barely wanted to move. Not freezing. Not hurting. Just numb enough to feel wrong.
That’s when it hit me: cold doesn’t always warn you with pain.
We turned back early that day. Sitting inside later, warming up, I couldn’t stop thinking about how close we came to ignoring something serious — simply because we didn’t know what to look for.
Most people assume winter discomfort is harmless. That if it’s dangerous, you’ll feel it right away. But sometimes the damage starts before your body sends the alarm.
Now, we don’t treat the cold casually anymore. We make sure our hands stay protected the entire time — warm, covered, and functional — so we can enjoy being outside without second-guessing it.
Because staying warm isn’t about comfort.
It’s about staying safe.
