It’s swap time again! Time to tidy up your yarn stash and purge the stuff you’re never going to use. That’s right, you can bring us your shame and leave your guilt in our yarn swap bins with the assurance that the yarn that didn’t work out for you will have a second (or third, or fourth) life in a new home. What do you do at a swap? Bring in the yarn and needles you don’t want and take home whatever you like from our swap bins.

- NOTE: partial balls are fine, but please bag them up together in a ziplock bag.

The leftovers are donated to charities, and don’t be embarrassed by the quality of the yarn you bring, whatever is left over is donated to charities like Street Knit, most of whom prefer acrylic! If you want to donate but can’t make the date please feel free to drop it by when we are open, sealed up in a plastic bag. The only yarn we can’t accept is anything that is strongly scented (cigarette smoke or perfume). We are also a drop-off point for Street Knit and Knitted Knockers of Canada.

You can donate to the swap any time we are open, regardless of when the swap is, and you do not have to pay to donate, you can just drop off your donations at the store. You still need to bag everything in ziplocks (which you can get affordably at Dollarama and Ikea).

Mohair Gallant

We just received a restock of Drops Yarns (including some really pretty new colours in Drops BRUSHED ALPACA SILK, Drops AIR, and Drops KID-SILK), so I thought it's the perfect time to share Mohair Gallant by Caidree, which I think will make a great mid-season sweater. Mohair Gallant is knit on 4.5mm/US7 needles with two strands of Drops KID-SILK held together, making it light and airy, something that can be worn over a tank-top or a tee-shirt, or if it's cold a long-sleeved tee. Since the two strands are held together, you can choose the same colour, or you can combine two different colours and marl or blend them. When you hold together two colours that are close to each other it creates a greater depth of colour, especially with fuzzy yarns like mohair or alpaca. I think this would also be a great sweater made with a single strand of Drops BRUSHED ALPACA SILK, which can be a great alternative to knitting with mohair. Drops BRUSHED ALPACA SILK knits to a slightly heavier tension, so you should plan to knit a size smaller in the pattern.

Everybody has a well-loved sweater that they would never get rid of – no matter how baggy, worn, or threadbare it may be. Join the movement against throw-away culture and fast fashion, by picking up a needle and thread and rediscovering forgotten techniques and the joy of mending. ⁠

Under Arounna’s guidance, participants will learn various visible mending techniques on knitwear. This workshop covers multiple techniques such as weave mending, seed stitch, and scotch darning, among others.⁠

This workshop is inspired by works of art in the exhibition Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction.⁠

Arounna Khounnoraj is a Canadian artist and maker. She works primarily in Toronto, to which she emigrated from Laos with her family, at the age of four. Although her formal education includes a Master’s degree in fine arts (sculpture and ceramics), her experiences eventually led to a career in fibre arts, with a focus on techniques such as embroidery and printing. In 2002, she started the multidisciplinary studio bookhou, with her husband John Booth. Arounna has also written six books and, in 2020, released Visible Mending, which introduced mending and the reuse of clothing as a personal and hands-on way to address issues of overconsumption and fast fashion within the textile industry.
