As we descend into the fallen leaves and sprawling pumpkin patches of Autumn there is much to classify this as a particularly frightening season. As the witch in the Scottish play warns, 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬. This could not be more applicable to the climate we find ourselves living in: already tenuous freedoms curtailed, eugenics more openly pushed than usual, nationalist hatred ever consolidated and amplified.

The horror genre has always brought forth, up from our subconscious to the surface of the page, primal and societal fears. It can assist us in being a cathartic release from real world terrors. It gives us the stimulation of fight or flight in a controlled environment. It lets us know that there is an end to that fear by putting the book down and walking away from it for a moment to catch our breaths. Collectively we do this together and we share this connection time and time again.

More than ever we need to embrace our communities and bolster each other, use our voices, and bring forth what this community can positively represent by directly talking about it.

Horror is political.
