This is a beautiful bit of storytelling, by Ward's Island author Kathleen Macdonald.
I remember this Ward's Island shack piano... eventually it was sadly vandalized brutally, and I salvaged a few of the ivories myself before the city finally came and picked it up.
Stories like this help me understand the living history and soul imbedded in some of the older pianos I service.
Listening to this, I can't help but feel I truly could have made these transitions a lot easier for Kathleen, including, fixing the soundboard, tuning the piano up to concert pitch, fixing the bum F, and honestly probably could have moved the thing on a dolly myself (it woudn't have been the first time)... but there would have been no story that way. 😂
The story of how my childhood prayers for a piano were answered - not once, but twice.
