Every day is record store day. Every day is small independent business day. We're here to support independent labels, independent distributors, independent labels, artists and bands as much as possible. We pay as much as we can to you for your used stuff. Big labels have come in and co-opted this thing called RSD to rip you off with sub-par releases that aren't actually rare like they say. They're all going to show up here used for half the price in the coming months anyways. We've tried RSD before and it was a awful experience. I've talked with many record store owners who lose money by participating. I encourage you not to go give all of your money to big companies today. Save it for your independent store, indie label, co-op grocer, small bookstore, DIY artist of any type, or make your own thing. We're marking this day by opening 10-minutes early and hoping it's otherwise a regular Saturday with many more just like it to come.

New 12-inch on ... Emission Record Shop edition with exclusive OBI available for preorder now. Ships around May 29.
After making us wait a decade for their first LP, SIYAHKAL hesitate none to deliver another blow to the head. A year later, another twelve inches.

On “Corrupt,” their trademark gallop comes through clearer while no less mired in ear-piercing qualls of noise. Unrelenting in intensity for its 12-minute run time, “Corrupt” has a certain urgency to it - a frustration, a tension and release. If it slows, it’s only to recollect and come back blazing.

At moments, the record harkens to the dissonance of LP-era DIE KREUZEN. At others, it harnesses the hypnotism of the first UNA BESTIA INCONTROLABLE LP. Here, SIYAHKAL uses rhythmic propulsion like a jackhammer to the skull. If there are prisoners being taken, it will not be them. Through all of it are KG’s gruff vocals, and lyrics that aim to capture the very moment that the greater “we” all find ourselves in - under the boot of States that neglect our very right to be free.

Iran or America, the people in power are all the same. They see us all as fodder for war, to maintain their power. And with ‘Corrupt,’ this injustice is not just written into word, but screamed into song. (Greg Benedetto)

-------------------

We are proud to announce the first ever Toronto photography exhibition by Ralph Alfonso, featuring his incredible documentation of the 1976-1979 punk explosion.

In addition to managing The Diodes and the Crash'n'Burn Club (Canada's first punk club, built by and run by the bands); Ralph was an important writer/photographer; covering the nascent scenes in New York, Toronto, and the UK for publications like Cheap Thrills (Toronto), New York Rocker and BOMP! (USA), Shades (Toronto) and others.

His trove of photographs includes Iggy, Patti Smith, Diodes, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys, Richard Hell, Stranglers, Mo-Dettes, The Curse, Teenage Head, Viletones, Barracudas, The Jam, Clash and many more.

-----

"Old school 76-77 punk is having a moment. It was 50 years ago that Punk magazine serendipitously gave this music a moniker and The Ramones spread the gospel worldwide, as hundreds of bands formed after every one of their concerts.

Anyway, all this to say, I was actually there and I took some photos and wrote about it, ran a club, managed a band, pi**ed off a major label, and then it was all over and I disappeared into the music industry labyrinth, all my negatives sitting in a box for eons, only to be rediscovered a few years ago and I'm still finding amazing images I didn't realize I had.

So, over the next few weeks, I am doing a DEEP dive into the negs and preparing for my first ever photo exhibition in Toronto at the cool Emissions Record Shop. See you there!"
