Hiring update!

I received WAY more resumes than I was expecting. I’m so honoured that so many people like what I’m doing, and want to be a part of my store. The passion and excitement I’m seeing in the cover letters has been so wonderful (and humbling). I’m reading every single application, but due to the volume, it’s taking me a little longer than I expected. I will also be responding to every applicant, whether they are being called in for an interview or not, because I’m so grateful for the time and effort everyone put into applying—it’s just going to take me a minute. I appreciate your patience while I work through this stack of resumes!

It’s going to be one million degrees, and my meds make it difficult to function in heat. I’m going to save myself the health troubles and stay home with my AC, my dog, and my WIP (also a ginormous pile of resumes). I hope you all stay safe and cool!

Holy heck my hiring post blew up! I have a whole ton of new followers, so I figure this is a good time to (re)introduce myself.

Hi! My name is Kelsi, and I run/own Bistitchual. I am a q***r, neurodivergent, disabled fibre crafter. I knit, crochet, cross stitch, and dabble in bookbinding. Outside of fibre, I love black coffee, red wine, fantasy novels, video games, and my dog.

Bistitchual started as a quarantine podcast with my friend, and somehow one thing led to another, which led to a yarn store in 2020. We wanted this space to be a celebration of all things q***r and Canadian, and I think we’ve done a pretty good job. All of our yarn comes from Canadian dyers and businesses; and we stock pins, patches, handmade jewelry, art, and tea from q***r makers across the country.

After a very fun three years, my friend/co-owner decided to follow their dreams down a new path, so it’s just me these days. Solo entrepreneurship has its ups and downs, but I feel so lucky to be able to do what I love every day. Though I am still very much looking forward to bringing on a new person to help out.

Anyways, that’s me and my store! If you have any questions, or just want to chat, leave me a comment :)

We’re hiring!

Have you always dreamed of working in a yarn store? Now’s your chance! Bistitchual is a crafty, q***r-owned yarn store exclusively selling fibre from Canadian dyers and businesses. We are located at 266 Jane St in Toronto, and share a space with Maison Basque (but the businesses are separate).

I am looking for a friendly, enthusiastic yarn lover to cover the store part-time on Thursdays and Fridays from 12-6pm. This will be a six month contract with the possibility to extend. Pay is $18.50/hr.

What I’m looking for:
- A passion for Canadian yarn.
- A warm, friendly demeanour.
- Some retail experience.
- A familiarity with knitting and crochet (other fibre crafts would be a bonus!), and a working knowledge of Ravelry.
- It would be a bonus to find someone who could teach knitting and/or crochet classes on the weekends. Instructors are paid $35/hr for teaching.
- As a q***r-owned business, we are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment. People with marginalized identities are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:
- Welcoming people to the shared Bistitchual/Maison Basque space.
- Assisting customers and answering questions.
- Completing transactions on Shopify POS.
- Packing online orders and dropping them at the mailbox across the street.
- Light cleaning, tidying, and restocking as needed.

Accessibility
- Interview questions will be sent out in advance of the interview so you can prepare without stress.
- I deeply regret that our current location is not physically accessible. The door opens outward, and there is a 3.25” step down to get inside, and there is a 5.5” step to get to the counter.
- The store is full of natural light with soft overhead lights.
- There is only ever very quiet music playing, or none at all.
- If you require any accommodations, please let me know!

How to apply:
- Email a resume and cover letter along with some pictures of your favourite projects to info @ bistitchual.ca with the subject heading “Bistitchual job posting”.
- The deadline to apply is July 13th.

I had such a good time at pride yesterday! I walked in the D**e March, attended a sapphic picnic, and danced my butt off at various stages. But mostly I just revelled in this incredible community I’m so proud to be a part of. There’s something so healing, and so inspiring about sharing space with people with a shared identity. Pride is first and foremost a protest, and this was a good reminder of who and what we’re fighting for 🏳️‍🌈

Happy pride!! To celebrate, we’re having a sale all weekend long. Today (Saturday) the store will be closed so I can attend some pride events, so the sale is online only. On Sunday the store will be open, so you can come and squish the yarn in person.

*stash sale yarn is excluded from the discount

We restocked a bunch of pride yarn from one of my favourite q***r, Canadian dyers, Amaranth Fibres! There’s a rainbow to suit every style, whether you’re feeling bright and vibrant, moody and jewel-toned, or a throwback to the 90s. These went SO FAST last year, so don’t sleep on them!

Zuko update!

We had another appointment with the vet, and he is responding positively to the meds. It will be another 12 weeks of regular bloodwork to monitor the situation, but we’re hopeful that this time he will be able to come off the meds eventually—hopefully with no relapse this time. Zuko has been so brave throughout this process, and I’m so proud of him.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated funds or bought from our fundraiser stash sale! The support means the world to us, and we are both so grateful. If you missed out on the stash sale, there’s still time to check it out! We’ll keep in running until the yarn is gone 💜
