Why sustainable packaging?

According to studies conducted by Dr. Simon Somogyi from University of Guelph, major quick-service brands such as McDonald's and A&W have increased the use of biodegradable packaging materials to support their corporate sustainability initiatives.

Using recyclable or compostable takeout containers has become not only a sustainability initiative but a differentiation point for restaurants under the takeout-driven market condition.

Many restaurants still use Styrofoam for takeout. Yes, styrofoam is recyclable, but very difficult to recycle. As stated by Recycle BC, "Foam can only be recycled at a recycling depot. Even if you’ve emptied and rinsed the container... do not put it in your home recycling bins. Foam breaks and crumbles easily, and is difficult to separate from other recyclables."

Contrastingly, PP-based microwavable container offers premium look, easy-to-clean, reuse, and recycle features. Bagasse and paper-based containers are even better; they can be thrown into the green bin without cleaning.

At GBC, we are continuously improving our product lines to meet your reusable, recyclable, and compostable packaging needs.

China's free trade port, Hainan province, banned the use, sale and production of single-use disposable nonbiodegradable ...
12/07/2020

China's free trade port, Hainan province, banned the use, sale and production of single-use disposable nonbiodegradable plastic products on December 1st. The initial list included disposable plastic bags, packaging bags, meal boxes, bowls, drink cups and straws made from non-biodegradable polymers.

Approximately 350 metric tons of biodegradable products have already been sold since the pilot program was announced in August. The annual production capacity of biodegradable bags and catering supplies is expected to reach 32,000 tons 11,000 tons respectively by the end of 2020.

Investors have agreed to invest over $365 million in eight raw material projects for biodegradable plastic products, according to news reports from China Daily. The projects will create a complete supply chain from raw materials to finished products by around 2022 to 2023. At the national level, the National Development and Reform Commission have pledged to curb plastic pollution in major cities by 2025.

Now the question is: Do we have enough biodegradable material to replace petroleum-based polymers without hurting food security and forests? Or is it better to invest in recycling infrastructure?

10/20/2020

Today the Government of Canada released the list of harmful single-use plastic items that will be banned by the end of 2021:
- Grocery checkout bags
- Straws
- Stir sticks
- Six-pack rings
- Plastic cutlery
- Food takeout containers made from hard-to-recycle plastics (like black plastic packaging)

GBC offers a wide range of sustainable packaging to help you make a smooth and cost-effective transition. Stay ahead of the game.
