For one weekend every July, Bay & Algoma transforms into something magical but the heart of this district is built by the businesses that show up here every single day.

To every shop, eatery, and business owner who poured their heart into making this year’s Buskers Festival unforgettable: thank you. You are the heartbeat of this neighbourhood long before the stage ever goes up.

Huge thank you to every business who made this year’s festival a massive success and to everyone who continues to support local every single day. Drop your favourite local Bay & Algoma spot in the comments below! 👇

Here it is: the announcement everyone has been waiting for (drum roll, please!) Our new Artist-in-Residence for the July 2026-June 2027 year will be Shelby Gagnon (yay!)

Shelby Gagnon is a 2-Spirit Anishinaabe/Cree artist from Aroland First Nation but has lived in Thunder Bay for most of her life. She is an environmentalist and advocate for the lands, waters and Indigenous peoples. Through involvement with community-engaged organizations and projects involving food sovereignty and security, BIPOC youth advocacy, 2SLGBTQ+ collectives, she uses multi-disciplinary mediums to explore individual and collective healing by connecting and living in reciprocity with the Land. By working with youth, activists and other artists, she is dedicated to expanding her knowledge and contemporary take on traditional methods of art, food and healing practices with and for the community.

Please join us in welcoming Shelby, and in thanking our previous Artist-in-Residence, Ellen Kruse, for her wonderful work. Shelby's summer bookmark, pictured here, is now available in the shop.

Please note we will be closed Saturday August 1st. To celebrate the Civic Long Weekend.
