The HERS Gift Shop is featuring a Special Display each month!
December will feature “Tis the Season“.

Christmas originated from a blend of ancient pagan and Christian traditions. Many of its customs, such as feasting, decorating with evergreens, and celebrating the winter solstice, were adopted by the early Christian Church from various cultural customs. The date December 25th was chosen by the Christian Church in the 4th century for the birth of Christ.

Santa Claus evolved from a 4th century Greek bishop named Saint Nicholas, known for his generosity, whose legend was brought to America by Dutch immigrants. The figure of Santa Claus as many know him today was shaped by a combination of Dutch traditions, the English Father Christmas and the influence of American writers and artists.

No matter what you believe make it a time to enjoy family and friends! What your feast may be, is not what matters, it is the gathering that will bring joy and lasting memories!

Every Woman's Centre, as well as the HERS Gift Shop, will be selling copies of For the Love of My Sister: Paula Gallant's Legacy for $25 each!

Copies can be purchased at Every Woman's Centre from Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 4:00pm, or at HERS from Tuesday - Thursday, 10:00am - 4:00pm and Saturday from 11:00am - 3:00pm!

Please note that if you are purchasing a copy at Every Woman's Centre, only cash and e-transfer will be accepted.

The HERS Gift Shop is featuring a Special Display each month! June will feature “Hats and Handbags“.

Hats have been worn for thousands of years, serving various purposes from protection and practicality to fashion, status and religious or ceremonial significance. Hats helped keep the head warm in cold weather, kept the head dry in rain and shaded the face and eyes against the hot sun. The shape, design, and decoration of the headwear may also convey one’s state of life as well as social position, and wealth.

Handbags and Purses date back more than 5000 years! Initially, carried by men, these were practical pouches for carrying essentials, later evolving into decorative fashion statements carried by women and men! I had a dear friend do a gallery wall of small hand bags she collected. She removed the glass from different frames she purchased from thrift stores and carefully placed each handbag with a short note of where it came from or what it meant to her. It was breath taking and the topic of conversation whenever she had guests in!

The HERS Gift Shop is featuring a Special Display each month! May will feature “Teapots”.

The “Teapot” history is intertwined with the rise of tea drinking, particularly in China and later in Europe. The first teapots emerged around 1500 in China and were small, designed for individual consumption and the brewing of loose leaf tea. Over time, the teapot evolved in shape, size and materials, reflecting cultural preferences and brewing styles across the world. The teapot is a symbol of friendship, of telling stories and confiding in each other. There it sits between your friends and your teacups, loyally keeping the tea warm, listening in on your conversations and never telling a soul what it’s heard. The “Teapot” represents treasured memories, moments of solitude, and an item of beauty to the collector!

The HERS Gift Shop is featuring a Special Display each month! April will feature “Baskets“.

Basketry, the art of weaving “Baskets”, has a history stretching back over 10,000 years. In early times baskets were primarily used for gathering, storing and transporting food, but also served a ceremonial and decorative purpose. Baskets are made from many different materials including wicker, bamboo, plastic, grasses, fax, wheat and wood. Weavers have designed
specialty baskets like knitting baskets, sewing baskets and many more. Baskets can be used to store towels in your bathroom, display your favorite plants and treasures and of course gather “Easter“ eggs and treats!

March will feature “Lighting“.

The history of “Lighting” began with fire and torches in ancient times and has evolved to include the invention of candles, oil lamps, gas lighting, incandescent light bulbs and now LED and Laser. Lighting can now adjust brightness and color, allow users to create various atmospheres to suit the desired mood and task at hand. Lighting has always played a crucial role in enhancing the ambience of interior spaces, visual interest, sets a mood, and allows you to showcase your personal style.

Did you know that Every Woman's Centre supports and sponsors the HERS Giftshop?

The HERS Giftshop sells one-of-a-kind, hand crafted items and allows women living on low income to work in a non-traditional work environment and improve their quality of life! All proceeds and made at the HERS Giftshop, as well as donations made, go directly back into supporting the HERS Project and it's clientele!

Interested in visiting? HERS is open every Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Saturday from 11:00am - 3:00pm, and is located at 234 Bentinck Street in Sydney!
