Staff review: Blue Ice BLAST helmet.

Climb On staff member Camilo has been testing out this groundbreakingly light dome from Blue Ice on multi-pitch climbs around Squamish recently.

At only 145g (size s/m), it’s the lightest rock climbing helmet on the market, with an innovative construction that doesn’t compromise on safety.

Check out Camilo’s review from a hot day on Spirit of Squamish (5.8, 8 pitches, Shannon Falls Area).

Comfortable fits, weight-saving designs, and enhanced ventilation for hardworking ascents on hot days: wearing your climbing helmet is cooler than ever.

When it comes to choosing your climbing helmet, we tend to split the offerings into three categories:

All-round workhorses: robust and reliable helmets with plastic exterior shells, ideal for big walls and rugged environments. Popular among guides and newer climbers.
Ultralight peace of mind: innovative, weight saving constructions which don’t compromise on safety for alpine missions and redpointing at your limit.
Hybrid helmets: a partial plastic outer shell offers increased durability, whilst maintaining a lighter feel.

We reviewed a range of new helmets on the market for 2026, including the groundbreakingly-light Blue Ice BLAST, to help you discover a rock climbing helmet you’ll never want to rope up without.

Climbing helmet certifications can be confusing.

Climb On staff member, Jord, explains the difference in drop testing criteria between the two main climbing helmet certifications: EN-12492 and UIAA-106.

The two main bodies setting climbing helmet standards are The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation).

The CEN is recognized by the European Union and European Free Trade Association as being responsible for developing and defining voluntary standards at a European level.

Meanwhile, the UIAA was originally founded by 20 different mountaineering associations for the collective interest in creating safer mountaineering equipment and advocating for access to the mountains.

There are two main helmet certifications that climbers and mountaineers should focus on: the CE EN-12492 and UIAA-106. These two certifications are very similar and have criteria specifically designed for risks encountered while climbing.

While the UIAA and CEN don't test the products themselves, they write the rules for what products should be able to withstand, which are tested by 3rd party labs to verify those standards.

New from La Sportiva: Granite 22 backpack.

Climb On staff member, Camilo, tested out the new La Sportiva Granite 22 backpack for a sunset ascent of Throne of Kings (5.10b, 8 pitches) overlooking Howe Sound.

“I’m always a bit skeptical about lightweight packs especially when it comes to a climbing pack since I never know how it will actually hold up in these settings. The Granite 22 by La Sportiva however showed me how far modern textiles have gone and how lightweight packs don’t always have to compromise on their durability. I enjoyed very much having a light spacious pack that I could trust to get rough in the rocks with!”

When fast-and-light is the name of the game, the new Granite 22 from La Sportiva is ready to deliver. Purpose-built for alpine scrambles, technical approaches, and single-day objectives, this compact 22L pack offers enough space for all your essential gear plus some—without weighing you down.
