Many people yearn for particular spiritual and natural gifts, because our culture highlights and values them, while other abilities and gifts tend to go unnoticed and are undervalued. People in coveted roles tend to attract admiration, friends and attention, traits that many desire. It can be hard to refrain from comparing ourselves to the people we look up to or desire to be like. Unfortunately, this can cause us to question our value and can create a desire to be like someone else instead of who God created us to be.
But Paul’s letter to the Romans (chapter 12) offers a beautiful, grounding truth: diversity is by divine design. God did not create a kingdom of identical roles. He intentionally distributed His grace and a variety of gifts across a vast spectrum of abilities. The truth is this - all of these abilities and gifts are needed for the church to function harmoniously, to walk upright (not unbalanced), with grace, good health and with Christ as the head of its body.
Consider this: what if your congregation consisted solely of pastors without other talents? They would likely find themselves in need, lacking skilled cooks and chefs to nourish them during potluck Sundays. Or imagine a Sunday morning Bible study filled only with those with the gift of hospitality - with no one to teach, no one to encourage and no one to organize care for the children? This sounds ridiculous, right?
Our passage - Romans 12:6a, 7, 8 - doesn't rank these gifts; it simply urges us to use them. When you embrace the gift that God has bestowed upon you, you align with His design for you and walk in obedience to Him. Please remember - your worth is not determined by how many people notice you or your gift, but by the One who gave it to you. God deeply cares about you, and He intentionally equipped you to be exactly who you are. Embrace it!
Heavenly Father, help me not to compare my gifts to others. Bless my ability to grow and mature in the gifts you have given me and to utilize them wisely, with excellence. Teach me to serve, encourage, and obey you with a joyful and content heart, knowing that I am cherished by You. Thank you. In Jesus name, Amen.
