Hoknes brings passion to work by Scott Larson
WWF dolls are just some of the items that Terry Hoknes has for sale at Hoknes Collectibles in Saskatoon.
A lifelong collector, Terry Hoknes has brought his hobby to the public.
He and wife Valerie have opened Hoknes Collectibles, located on Avenue E between 22nd and 23rd streets.
“I’ve been buying and selling collectibles my whole life,” Hoknes said.
First it was going to garage sales and then on eBay.
The couple opened the store in April.
Hoknes said there was nothing like what he envisioned for his store in the city, which is a wide, eclectic mix of collectibles.
“My goal was to reach every age demographic,” he said. “From the ’50s to the ’80s — stuff that people have grown up with.”
Their collection runs the gamut — the 1950s include Roy Rogers lunch boxes and other western themed items, the ’70s has figurines like the Dukes of Hazard, the ’80s and ’90s feature WWF, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joes.
There are original movie posters dating all the way back to 1919. There’s coins and stamps, dinosaur teeth, bubble gum cards, rock Tshirts, 4,000 comics, original board games, an Elvis section, Star Wars Lego and jewelry.
Then there is Hoknes’ specialty, more than 1,000 items of Beatles memorabilia.
The bestseller in the store is the record collection, made up mostly of ’70s and ’80s classic rock and heavy metal.
“Everyone likes different things,” Hoknes said, adding he buys, sells, trades and consigns.
“I like talking to people. They get pumped up talking about what they love.”
Hoknes Collectibles is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
