Building Home: A Glimpse into the World of Youth Housing

We welcome you to learn about the profound narratives of young individuals navigating housing instability in NB. Youth are taking charge of their narratives and sharing what they feel is important for you to understand about their experiences.

By bringing together art, research, and advocacy, Building Home signals the importance youth have in our communities and our commitment to build better futures for young people across the province. Youth have a right to housing that respects their agency and meets their needs.

Cassandra Monette has a passion for blending art, research, and youth work together to create impact. She is dedicated to amplifying youth voice through arts-based storytelling and understands the influence narratives can have on identity and community membership.

Harriet Taylor has had a long career in the arts as teacher, administrator and practitioner. Recently she has found purpose in channeling her creativity into advocacy for change and social action through art.

Emily Blair is a weaver and cultural worker based in unsurrendered and unceded traditional Wolastoqey land, known as Fredericton, New Brunswick. Blair’s work involves woven pattern design, textile based installations, and multi-media collaborations.

What an incredible run so far!

We have been able to speak with almost 1,500 people through our 3 exhibits and our conversations have strengthened the understanding that youth deserve housing that meet their needs and help them thrive.

As we move forward, we do so with an openness for collaboration and a strong gratitude for all the youth that put their stories forward to advocate for better solutions across the province. We look forward to next steps!

This installation was always meant to bring people together and highlight the challenges youth face with homelessness.
We are grateful to have been involved in such rich conversations at the CAB Summit this year and witness the collaborative spirit of people who are pushing for change.
We need to respect the experiences of youth and ensure that youth have a right to housing that meets their needs.
To everyone who came to visit the installation, thank you for supporting our youth and learning more about the experiences they have shared with us all.
As we continue to support youth, we encourage everyone to continue to invest in strong partnerships, and stay tuned into the conversation.
